The Shields Bicycle Company
I just came across photocopies of a magazine article about the Shields Bicycle Company that I made years ago. Very interesting article from Canadian Business magazine, May 1981. It gives an insight into how the Canadian government dealt with the bicycle industry in the bike boom era. A good read if you're interested in old Nishikis and CCM.
Oops, it turns out that Image Shack was not a reliable image sharing site and most of those pages have disappeared. I can't even log in anymore. If anyone comes across this and is interested, PM me because I now have those pages on Dropbox.

Thanks for that.Shields had a shop on Queen St East in Toronto back in the early 80's...maybe his dad's? He's still one of the most active collectors of vintage bikes in Canada and much of his collection can be seen in the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. Pretty big of him considering it was the government in Ottawa that scuttled his business.

Shields Nishiki???
I have not read the article yet, but will do so after I finish bike hunting today. I saved the information in my Shields file for future reference.
I have owned one really nice Shields, and quite a few not so nice. However, my question is - What is a Shields-Nishiki? I have owned a few of these bikes and still have one or two tucked away in The Old Shed.

Randy, the Shields Nishikis were imported and marketed by Shields. My 1977 Landau is a Shields Nishiki. Later, Shields began importing and assembling bicycles under his own name, but the government gave him no breaks and he went bust. read the story.

A sad story. One that can be applied to crappy banks and car manufacturers today. I'd like to have seen a list of major stockholders of CCM cross-referenced to influential government members from that time. Might be enlightening.

I do have pix there, but they’re all resized and shrunk- they’re about useless.
Thanks Imageshack, good bye and good riddance, you clowns.
I got this email from Imageshack the other day- I edited out their links.
Dear ImageShack Users,
You are receiving this email because you have at least 100 or more images

for a while.
We wanted to appraise you of some changes at ImageShack that likely affected
your account.
If you are FREE ImageShack account user, your images will no longer work
on websites other than (removed link to Imageshack)

ImageShack account to "paid" status, please follow this link (while being
logged in to your account): (removed link to Imageshack)
We are not planning to remove or delete any images from your
(removed link to Imageshack)account, even if your account remains free until

Another of the bikes I picked up in one lot is this mid 70s Shields Deluxe. These are "as received" and I have done almost nothing so far to the bike - its a little further down the list right now. Does anyone have any information about this model? Clearly they used the Peugeot style for the seat tube decal, but the rest of the bike appears to be Japanese based - Nishiki?
I don't think the wheels are original - Huret wing nuts and Rigida rims?

With so many free hosting sites available today, there is absolutely no reason to use a dysfunctional one like ImageShack.

Hello,
I realize this is a very old post, but I am interested in reading the article you reference.
I have recently acquired an old Shields bike and would like to know more about the company.
Thanks,
Bruce Royer

Royale Shields Bike
Hello, My apologies for interrupting this thread, but I am looking for information about bike companies that might be interested in purchasing a Shields bikes? I bought a "Royale" Shields bike without doing any homework on it and was going to bring it to a shop to restore, but now I just don't have the time. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to the forums. The Royale was a late 1970s model. Being the bottom of the line, single speed, coaster brake model, there will probably be little interest and value, especially if it needs restoration.

Thank you @ T-Mar for your reply. The restoration in this bike isn't major, just needing new tires and I wanted to change the color. Since my bike has little value due to its make, I will just try to sell it to anyone that might want it via Facebook/Craigslist.
Thank you for your help and knowledge!! 😊
