SB,

Look here if you haven't.

It looks to be a Volare. But still hard to tell.

Gold or black? Huh, why would you repaint a chrome frame?

Yep its the one and the guy I got it from is a fellow forum member. It definitely a Volare its Chrome and has been stripped but not by the seller. Looks like its going to be a nice project. I haven't decided to clean it up and polish it and leave it chrome or whether to have it powdercoated and leave the chainstays chrome depends on if I use the fork I got from him. He threw in a set of downtube shifters that trim the FD when you shift the rear, thats pretty cool I had never seen that before. Its definitely 530 its stamped on a couple of places on the frame and its really light. Not a bunch of rust, nothing some oxalic acid won't take care of. I even have kicked around the idea to have it completely re-chromed depending on the cost. According to the seller these bikes had the first generation dura-ace stuff so that would be fun to find. Its going to be a long term project because I figure to spend a LOT more on this bike than I did the Continental. I'm taking suggestions on the color or lack thereof for this bike.

Nice find!
I'd keep it chrome, look into automotive rechroming shops for quotes.
A dark clearcoat for a black chromed look would give it a nice look.

That looks like a Suntour Microshift(sp?) shifter, circa early 80s.
I have one of the first models, with sharp-edged levers, not the nice smooth units in your pic.
Nice trick shifters, but can't be used with bottom routed BB guides.

For what its worth thr original components on the bike were early Shimano Dura Ace. The only difference between the two years is the 1977s the rear derailluer was called Crane and by 1978 they relabled it Dura Ace. All the other components say Dura Ace on them. I have a red one in the basement and it rides every bit as good as my 1974 Paramount P10-9. They were truly an excellant bike for the money. Roger

I like this idea on the main triangle, and leave the stays all chrome

I like the black chrome idea and I would want to highlight the lugs with a complimenting color. Keep the suggestions coming and if you all have pictures of the ideas thats even better. I was thinking a mist green or that champagne color but I'm up in the air for sure. It looks like there is a lot of early Dura-Ace stuff around, thats good. Lots of ideas for this bike running around in my head, my wife thinks I should leave it chrome. Maybe, if it polishes up I will and if not I'll have to think about powdercoat. Maybe that pearlescent orange Schwinn used would be nice too

there are still a lot of unanswered questions...did the bike originally come chromed under the orange (or scarlet) paint? Did a previous owner have it chromed? Anyone want to scratch their Volare in the interest of science (and all bikedom?)

There are traces of red paint side the headtube so it appears as if it was stripped before the seller got it. Now that fork is not the original but its got Camppy dropouts. There are no traces of the frame not being chrome before it was painted so I have to go by what he told me and I have no reason to doubt him. Heck he is a fellow forumite. He is the guy that floated the idea about a bike co-op in the Puyallup Wa. area.

The places on my 1977 Volare where it is chipped are all chrome underneath. I'm guessing someone stripped the paint. I was lucky enough to find mine with the original Dura-ace headset and fork.

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the original components.

Great find!

My '75 Schwinn Voyageur II is all-chrome under whatever paint there is left - don't see why the Volare would be any different.

Stringbreaker!

How funny! I didn't know it was you! If we would have known I probably would have given you a bikefo discount or some more parts! Anyways......I will try to look up the guy who flipped it originally and see if he still has the original Dura Ace components. You never know! I also know a guy who has WAY more bikes and parts than me. He may have stuff you want or need as well. The only problem is it takes 2 to go there 'cause he's a talker. Someone needs to amuze him while the other digs for the goods! Let me know! And I am super glad it will go to good use. I didn't like the top tube length for myself so I just sat on it for a couple years till I needed more room. It was hard to let that one go! Have fun! Oh ya......my vote is for a modern twist of the factory color! A deep scarlet candy over tiny metal flake. That would really pop against the chrome lugs and seat stays. I would not suggest a clear of any sort over chrome because in order for it to really stick you need mechanical adhesion (scratches) or a chemical adhesion promoter which usually is an ugly translucent yellow color. One chip or scratch and it would never end! To paint or not to paint......

kpug: I was thinking about something along those lines except with the pearlescent orange. I already have a really really RED bike so the orange with the chrome seat and chainstays would rock. I think I'll have that fork stripped and chromed complete. I really think that will pop the old eyes. Where does the guy that flipped it live? I might just go with you and talk to him while you dig. I'm going to completely mock this bike up even to the point where I can take it for a ride so I don't have any surprises after I get the paint or powdercoat done. I might put some decals on it but I don't know where I might get the Volare decals.

The guy I mentioned that needs to be diverted lives in Graham. He is not the guy I got the bike from. The trip is usually well worth it. He has a 2 car garage, several sheds and a small bus body full of bikes and parts. My eyes glaze over with every visit. You just might be able to find what you need or maybe pick something up to flip so you can offset the price of your resto! I'll try to hunt down the guy I got the bike from this week and get back to you with any news. And I am a big fan of the orange idea.
Later.........

Ok and whilst you guys are there I'm putting my order in for some decent wheels for my Woodrup frame... .

And handlebars...

I think the pearlescent orange sounds sharp.
