Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Even peeing over the side is strictly proscribed offshore in anything but daylight and the mildest conditions. It’s too easy a way to die. We had to pee in a bucket and use the sink in the head to dump it because it was just too much of an effort to get into ones safety gear and back on deck just to pitch a bucket overboard and it was so rough that carrying anything was difficult. Fortunately, this was a real cruising boat and the head had a dorade vent, one of those rotatable air scoops that look look like the bell of a tuba or something and even so it was nearly unbearable in there. We had a 5 gal. bucket, which one of the crew pooped in every day, much to the distress of anyone trapped below with him. Some boats have cockpits open at the stern or with great big drains which can be sluiced out with a bucket of seawater. This boat wouldn’t have worked for that. Fun times.

When you ride above the Hollywood sign, do you have to drive to get there?

You can ride to the entrance. There's an archway you have to dismount and go through, then some stairs, I think, then you can re mount and ride the fire road. I had a bunch of pictures from behind the sign. When I did it people hadn't started putting locks on the fence yet.

No. Round trip from home was about 75 miles but I went a less direct route to meet up with friends. I think the most direct route is about 50 miles round trip.
When we went there recently it was the first time I had ever been above the sign, my other club rides would go where the common view points are.

When I did it, I had a 50 mile ride to the start of the climb. (Through some fairly questionable areas) I hand wrote out the directions from my Garmin nav. From the car. The hardest part was finding the road going up. Once you get close you can't see the sign, trees and houses block it out.
Then up to the cul de sach where the arch is. Then you finish on the fire road. Lots if people were running it or waking it. One of the home owners was outside answering questions like a tour guide. It was a neat Sunday.
Then I rode back to the hotel.

At any point during this drive did you ask yourself where your life went wrong?

Or you could move to the desert.

I'm talking about around the house. Most people have something there.

One side of the house has a plant that requires attention. Bridal wreath. Needs to be trimmed a couple of times a year. If it were up to me, I'd tear it out.

This is even better than MoAlpha's toilet-free death boat.

I was having the time of my life. Slightly less fun when I got to I-84, but still a pretty good drive even then.
