Addiction LXXVII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Apparently our office has ONE box of masks (I guess that's 50-100 masks) and I doubt we can get more.

So much for the edict that every patient entering the office gets one.

Sad!

This is why I like REI.
I have a larger than normal dividend this year, maybe I'll go online shopping today.

I had 80-some-odd bucks this year. Already gone with the spring tune-ups.

I was looking around the site the other day, adding things to my wish list. They unfortunately don't carry the Giro shoes I've been contemplating for some time (they did at one time, but I guess I waited too long), so Amazon got some of my money. So did Adventure Cycling for a couple other odds and ends.
I find I use REI more for camping and travel anyway, not so much bike stuff.

Yup - 040 LUC. Resolution isn't fantastic, but it's enough.

I’m at my retina specialist’s office and they’ve suspended making coffee for patients, presumedly because of Covid-19. It was crap coffee anyway, but...

Yeah, it's nice to take a chunk out of bigger ticket items, but they don't really carry any that I'm in "need" of at this point. The next best thing, IMO, is to use the dividends on those mundane things that you really don't like to spend money on. This time, it was some shop supplies and chains - REI has a better price on Shimano 601 and 701 chains than my LBSs (and that's before factoring in the dividend), so I often get them there.

China is coming out of it, Europe is in deep, the US is just beginning to get real, and we have had virtually nothing yet. So interesting to observe. I will do my pre-panic shopping today, and might even swing by Costco, since I'll have the car. Some frozen berries for the daily smoothies at the top of the list.
Unfortunately, Mexico seems to be following in Orangie's wake, policy wise. It's still surreal from our vantage point.
Have you ever read 'On The Beach'? A good read for these times.

He was prolly butt-hurt that I went by him at close to 40, so he had to "dial it up" and swerve towards me. You can also hear my radar chirping like mad, which is one of the reasons that I moved further off the line just before he comes by.

Not sure what you're referring to. Email and snail mail notifications of dividend totals came out within the last week or so, though I caught wind of mine earlier than that, somehow.

Speaking of family and traveling, what would be best practices if, you know... hypothetically, you wanted to assist your mother-in-law with navigating her recently widowed status? Assuming there's no domestic travel ban, that is.

Even before leaving VA the last time, we'd been planning on going back down over Spring break to help her with things like visiting assisted living facilities (probably off the table at this point), finding a realtor to list the house (prolly not a hot market for sellers right about now, either), sort through possessions with down-sizing in mind, further consultation with estate planners, etc. Current events obviously complicates this quite a bit and her health is a concern (she's not the most robust, but has been mostly self-quarantined for years).

I assume that we'd just pull the plug on the trip if any of us were symptomatic prior to the trip. The kids actually wore masks and went through hand washing routines during the Christmas trip (father in law's immune system was compromised and the kids had come down with respiratory bugs), so we'd be ready to do that again, if necessary. We normally do like to get out while we're there, but I assume that social distancing protocols will be employed and that a lot of things won't be open, anyway.

Her time on this rock is limited, as is our time with her, so we want to be mindful of that, but at the same time we don't want to be the Outbreak monkey.
