Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wonder how far off the shoulder they were for a pickup to hit and kill him and still drive off or if they were too close to the road. I don't know the details of course and it's always a sad story to read about cyclists getting hit by cars or by people throwing things at cyclists.

Does anyone have statistics about cycling deaths/accidents/incidents in the US? Being stationed in Belgium I can tell you the bikers per capita is way higher than in the states and I bet the accident % is astronomically lower, although it's possible there are more accidents due to the sheer volume of cyclists on the road

Unfortunately, it's something that happens every now and then. I've noticed that a surprising amount of time, it is actually the cyclist's fault, or the cyclist who wasn't paying enough attention. Just another reason I try to stick only to roads that have marked bike lanes and lower amounts of traffic... industrial areas on weekends or nights are my best friend. Some rides I'm surprised if I see 4/5 cars a mile on a four lane 40mph major thoroughfare.

Reading the comments after that article, it doesn't seem like he was riding on a route he should have been on.
