I really didn't want to ride today - mostly did because of this thread! Conditions varied between a stiff breeze and blustery winds, but finally had a tailwind the entire ride back. Saw just one other rider......

I've never ridden more than 105 miles in the same day, today was supposed to be 107, but I realized 1.5 miles from home I'd forgotten my backpack (again) so I went back for it, and the map was off by a couple of miles compared to Strava, so I went with the longer of the two. Going to try the same route the other way to see if it's any easier, but not tomorrow.

Jeepers, how much hydration do you bring for that kind of mileage and what kind of elevation do you tackle? I did 58 and 48 yesterday and today and the total is like 1,000, LOL!

But fear not, the Blue Ridge Mtns. beckon and next weekend will be a group ride scheduled 65 with 5,300 of climbing...........

Well I thought I'd replied to you, wthensler , but I can find no evidence of that here. It was pretty verbose, anyway. I'll try it again. How much hydration I bring depends upon the weather and the terrain. I've had 100-milers that used 3 or 4 liters of water, Gatorade, and/or soda, but today it wasn't too hot, never got above 80 degrees, and the return leg was down the coast, which was pretty mild, and I got to where I stopped for lunch (at mile 51) without quite emptying my first 22-oz water bottle (I start longer rides with two of them full of ice water). So I bought a big soda with my lunch, dumped all of its ice into the empty bottle and filled it with most of the soda, and drank the rest with my lunch. Those two bottles got me to mile 93, and I was getting thirsty, so I stopped at a gas station in Malibu and bought a bottle of Gatorade and a bottle of Coke (the latter being hardly the optimal hydration fluid, but it tastes so dang good ice cold when you're thirsty, and my iPhone says I burned 9,710 calories today, so I figured I could be forgiven). That got me home easily, and I've been enjoying hop-based fluids since I got back.

Strava says I did 4,941 feet of climbing today, and my quads tell me it's not kidding. I like to say I'm more of a social climber, so I don't surmount these hills quickly, but I'm getting better at getting to the top and saying "Pfft, that wasn't that bad." I did have some humor in one of the post-climb descents, the biggest of them (the Sepulveda Pass). I like descents. I like to go fast. I've never been passed on a descent before (about the only time my weight becomes an advantage), but today a younger, thinner, fitter (aren't they all?) guy passed me, and I felt the need to give chase and correct that. Luckily, the helmet-cam video does a decent job of telling the story, including when I caught up to him later (spoiler alert: he blows a red light to pass me again once I've got ahead of him) and congratulated on beating me down a hill. That video should be here:

I'm going to try this route the other direction to see if it's any easier (it probably isn't). But that won't happen tomorrow.

Wow, thanks for the video! I definitely wouldn’t have blown that light. Just not worth it. Enjoy your recovery and let us know how the opposite ride works out.

Weird morning. When I left it was still dark. There was so much particulate matter in the air that it looked like rain in my headlight. But it wasn't. Not sure if this is ash from the fires out west or pollen or what. And when the sun came up it was definitely smoggy. I don't recall ever seeing it quite like this. It looked like LA on a bad smog day.

Back to the present, especially with today's very blustery ride. Winds kicked up early and often - and made for an unpleasant return. We had an extremely windy winter two years ago, and I hope this isn't an omen of things to come. The Domane sits very tall, and I really feel those long 175 cranks when riding the drops, which is how I spent most of the last 29 miles. Worst case, I'll swap bikes and ride the Bianchi here......

I saw the same thing in my headlight in the early morning. I wasn’t sure if it was a really lite rain or fog or what

Apparently dust from West Texas. And we breathed that stuff in for a couple of hours. Great.

Did a metric century out to Fontana, didn’t plan it that way, it just happened that it’s 62 miles from my house to the Fontana Metrolink station.

Way too many chores today, and the rental lowboy car trailer took far, far longer to acquire and load than I thought. Hope I don't develop riding laziness, but 12 actually felt like a short vacation, LOL! Leaving for VA tomorrow, but hoping to get in a few before we head out. Keep riding everyone!

With all the riding some of you fellas do, how do you remain clydesdales? I weighed 194 this AM at the gym, but I'm sticking around here until I get kicked out. Otherwise I'll get lazy and end up back here anyway....

My doctor says if I can get down to 210, that'd be a good weight for me, so I think I'll be a Clydesdale for life. I can live with that. And if I overdo it and slip under 210, or 200, well, I like beer, so I can take corrective action easily.

I must like to eat, my doc said that my weight was ok for my height . I like to snack but I decided to cut out the candy last month. My worry is what happens when I can't ride any more.
