Maybe nobody will take the Trek. There's too many of those around.

I'm imagining some kid's mom throwing away his junk while he's in college - all his first edition comics and rookie cards

A reply to this, what could start a new thread: the ones who find some value in the trash bin, other than the homeless --- are vintage bike shops. As there be some people in general society that don't know the value of old bike parts and throw such away. Even vintage bike shops have the possibility to scam one, just as any typical business ---- but rather of a vintage bike.

While out to sea my mom chucked my baseball card collection and Mattel Major Matt Mason moon rover. She didn't realize what they meant to me and just wanted things cleaned out. Empty nesters do some strange things!

Wonder why a bike co-op wasn't called to take them?

The Classic and Vintage forum has a long running thread on dumpster bikes. I'm one of those people who salvage bikes from the metal pile in a fairly affluent town. Most of them go to a local charity, and there are some I keep or trade. Amazing what some people trash, and it's sad to see the employees carelessly smash up good bikes.

Dick's Sporting Goods ran a trade-in deal once a year - gave a flat rate based on sale price of new bikes. We would pull the pedals, spin the handlebars straight and stack them on pallets that went back to the home warehouse or some central location. Some of them were obvious junk, but anything that was halfway decent was refurbished and given to some charitable organization for needy kids.

But - if we ever had a bike that we had to scrap - customer's or warranty item - we had to damage it sufficiently that it was totally unusable before we tossed in in the dumpster in case a dumpster diver tried to use it - a liability issue. That may be the case with these.

I'm sure there's a charity out there, somewhere, that could find a good home for those bikes.
