Finally Caught a Break(through)!
Planned on taking a Saturday ride on the old 12-speed yesterday. Checked the tire pressure and the rear was down to 80psi. So I pumped it back up to 95psi and as I went to disengage the pump from the valve stem I saw the innertube poking out through the sidewall. So I deflated the tube and took another bike. Later that day I bought new tires and mounted them today.
Usually I don't detect sidewall breaches until there is a catstrophic blowout miles from home.

That is one BIG slice.
my SOP --
1) go for ride
2) back home bike gets flipped or put in stand
3) clean rims and check tires for glass, cuts, sand-spurs .... also clean bike
4) results in no tire surprises awaiting : r.e.- tire condition OK but must still check pressure for slow leak

I have been fortunate to have not experienced sidewall damage like that . I would assume that tire is beyond repair???

Nice one!
I caught a gouge like that a month or two ago. At work, of course, I noticed the tube poking out of the tire. I (carefully) rode the 9 miles home without incident, and then the tire went in the bin.

I'm glad you found the key issue with your tire.

The real positive to me seems to be that at least you found your keys.

Apparently, that was not the case.
