Price of Shimano SPD pedals

I’m looking for some new Shimano Mtn SPD pedals and the prices are all so high now. The bottom price clipless mountain pedals that used to go for $25 seem to be $40 everywhere. Anyone know why?

Was that $25 you claim with or without cleats?

I just ordered a set of M520 pedals for $40. Seems to be the going price from reputable sellers.

yes it does. That’s how much I bought my 540 for not so long ago. Thought maybe there was some known reason for the increase.

$39 with free shipping seems pretty reasonable for a decent set of pedals with cleats.

Except you could get them for under $30 on Amazon just a few weeks ago.

Hmmmm? Let me think. What was a few weeks ago? Was it black Friday, or something like that?

True story, In September I purchased them off Amazon for $36.00 free shipping.

At that time the particular seller I used had the lowest price. That seller is in England, it took about a month for them to arrive. This wasn't a problem for me as I was using them for a build that I still haven't finished.

fyi for a little more money one can get a lot more quality (SHIMANO PD-A600 Premium SPD Pedal).

well it was just a few weeks ago and the silver and white were like $22. I don’t think it was free shipping but total was less than $30 I’m sure. Should have bought then but didn’t. Now they seem to be expensive everywhere.

Here is a thread from last year:

https://www.bikeforums.net/general-c...m530-m520.html

somebody mentions 520 for $25 and 530 for $28. Those are the prices I am used to seeing.

seems that way. But why the big increase? Something wrong with Shimano production? Tariffs? Figured there must be some reason.

I think starting June 1st the import tariff for bike parts from China including petals, increased to 25% in addition to the 10% added in 2018. The cost of these tariffs might be finally trickling down to the consumer level along with some increases in steel and aluminum prices as well affecting maybe production. (Section 301 of the 2018 Misc. Tariff Act)

Thanks, that probably explains it. Glad there is nothing up with Shimano. I forgot about the tariffs till I was getting some weird responses here and started thinking more.

Might be tariffs. Might be Minimum Advertised Price, a form of price fixing that's legal in the USA. We used to get stuff pretty cheap from the UK/EU because it's illegal there... but that avenue closed about a year ago. Someone might have slipped a few past. The only time you see things under that price now, they are on discontinued clearance when the MAP no longer applies. Sometimes you see it when they make a running change to a design, like a tire gets a new compound. That's a great time to buy for things like pedals which don't have problems with fashion or "new standards"

Pedals are where I find them. I keep my eyes open for good deals.

If you have a local bike coop, they often have a box full of pedals that have been swapped out. Some in good shape. Sometimes needing bearings rebuilt (generally easy with Shimano type SPD pedals).

I usually pay $5 to $10 per pair. Perhaps a bit more for good quality ones like m8000/m9000 pedals.

For some reason, Shimano has yet to beat Merlin into submission. They have M520 for $29.80.https://www.merlincycles.com/en-us/s...als-48024.html

Lots of nonsense in this thread...

...but overlooking that, you have three sources for sub-$40 SPD pedals:

(1) Aliexpress - new production, long shipping times
(2) Craigslist - local and quick, used with some wear, able to be inspected
(3) Facebook Marketplace - same as CL (above), often a few $ less

If you know what you're doing, you can get things from AliExpress in less than two weeks.
