my policy of moving left a few inches every time someone honks wouldn't have worked with that guy, hopefully you called the cops. Society needs that person off the roads

there was a guy near Portland that would do this anytime he overtook a cyclist. Doesn't really have to be a part 1.

From youtube comment
I had a run in with this guy just a few weeks ago. I was headed east on Jasper from 287. He started honking at me when he was at least a mile behind me. I turned left on 119th and he kept following me. Other cars were passing us and I was on the white line as well. The double yellow switched to a dotted line on 119th and he pulled up alongside me then proceeded to scream at me to get off the road.
If the above comment is true and its the same person. It seems like this person is bent out of shape about the 3ft passing law, not realizing it allows for passing with a double yellow.

part 1 is these people just getting on their bikes and going for a ride. Some people get super aggro about anyone anywhere on the road on a bike.

This is a driver who needs reporting ... every single f'ing time this happens. It's harassment, and must be stopped. At the very least, a couple officers at his door to question him might be a help, and might help him realize a better path. Or it might be a warning before he gets reported again, and is issued some citations about his driving habits.

edit: I only mean since this is a well-established pattern. I'd let it go once, maybe ... maybe ... the second time. But since it's an obvious trend, videos and verbal reports need to be made.

I don't think that New York has a 3 foot passing law. I suspect the driver is obsessed with the double yellow and is not so obsessed with acting like an adult

+1... move left and go slower with each honk. Pretty soon, they get the message.

I don't think I've seen such a blatant display of road rage/driver intimidation such as this. Wow that BS must have been really annoying...

I'm happy to say that I feel local law enforcement here would go after this guy/gal, especially since the whole thing was recorded on video.

I know it's hypothetical, but I wonder if this asshat considered what could have happened if his/her actions made one of the cyclists crash.

Yeah, I think this driver can most definitely be filed under the BAD driver category.

Part One is the driver being released from the mental institution solely because his insurance ran out.

Update as of Monday Sept 17th: The Colorado State Patrol is involved and we've found others who have had similar run-ins with this driver. If anyone else has information about this driver call Trooper Donahue 303-239-4501. Need to centralize information. Thanks) Here is what was supposed to be my relaxing Sunday morning ride with my teammate until things became a bit unsettling when an older male driver came up behind us in his Ford Explorer (license plate Colorado 893 EKG). This guy obviously doesn't like seeing bikes for some reason since he sat behind us for more than five minutes blaring his horn. What's even worse is we saw him approaching from behind and to be polite we ride single file to give him as much road as possible, as we did with every other car we encountered on this road east of Longmont, CO. This guy was so intent of bugging us that he backed up traffic behind him and cars had to pass him on a double yellow line. It seems he was the one obstructing traffic, not us. We ended up slowing up in order to force him to pass us and go on with his day. Insane. Hopefully this is the worste thing this guy does to cyclists.

That would be much funnier if not for the fact that it could actually be true. Still good for a chuckle, though.

in this case, my response would be to slow down / stop, address this guy with a one-finger salute, perhaps accompanied by some choice verbal commentary. if he felt inclined to join me on the side of the road, then he's got a problem. a camera on hand would provide some documentation, as well as possible entertainment value if the driver presented an objection to its presence.

i maintain that threatening behavior by a driver is assault, and i will respond accordingly in self-defense. i wouldn't do nothing, as these cyclists did. not knocking their approach, but it would be a cold day in hell before i continued down the road with this wacko following along blaring his horn. **** that.

The motorist was going to sit behind them honking until he got bored of it, I really don't think that escalating it would be a good idea. When well-behaved people refuse to pass and there is no reason not to, I coast for a second or two. It's a little annoying that I have to think for people driving 7000 pound suv's, but that's reality.

Yeah, I wouldn't escalate this either. He's obviously okay with being a dick. It would be too easy for him to speed up and run the cyclists off the road.

I hope the police get him.

You weren't in nearby Larimer County, were you?

Maybe it was the sheriff Jim Alderdan.

For those of you unfamiliar, Longmont is very close to Larimer County, a place where the sheriff is distinctly anti-cyclist and there is an undercurrent of bike hate among the some of the 'traditional' elements in Larimer county. I seem to recall a story of fliers distributed in Larimer county prior to a large organized bicycle event, rallying the public to obstruct traffic with their vehicles and create road hazards by being rolling slowdowns along the course.

quite the heated climate to ride thru up those parts. and the sheriff inflames the situation.

Bob Mionske has gone up against sheriff Jim Alderdan on radio shows and offers a scathing critique of the policies in Larimer County.

Larimer County sheriff Jim Alderdan dislikes cyclists

Unfortunate. I too have pulled up, stopped and asked what the motorist needed? if it is an emergency? A horn should just be used in an emergency....do you need some help?

.....playing it like the fool for laughs, but I've also had driver confrontations escalate and backfire so cannot endorse any technique except

"smile and wave, boys...smile and wave" in these types of situations.
