could use some help if anyone has done this before.

The short answer is "No".

There are a lot of parts to doing it you have to think about rear triangle spacing, brakes, derailleur mounting and cable routing.

what bike is it? does it even have the bracket for a derailleur?

Unless this bike has a special value to you, or you already have the necessary parts on hand, you’re better off getting a bike that’s already got a multi speed drivetrain installed.

Not impossible, but likely you'd put far more work into it than it's worth.
