If you can install it, it will work. The only real criteria is whether it will fit. Once on you can always make it work even if it isn't ideal. I've never had a front shifter that works flawlessly. It was never the best part of the drivetrain.

I've done this without issues on an 6800 crankset. The 50-34 and 46-36 use the same spindle and BCD. Haven't noticed any issues shifting either.
