Was out riding the other day and I could see some serious storm clouds in the distance. So I needed the fastest path home (I was on my road bike with 25mm tires). There were two options and I was not sure which was the quickest so I let my Garmin 1030 find the fastest path. When I saw the route I saw a turn onto a road that was not familiar to me (this was between West End and Carthage, NC). When I got to the turn this is what was in front of me. Maybe not the fastest path after all.

yesterday's ride a couple of miles outside Virginia City, Nevada. VC is a boom town from the Comstock days.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comstock_Lode
the city was named after a guy that really didn't have much to do with the lode.

In Arizona, riding through a small back-road pass in some hills, returning toward civilization.
Sorry about the poor frame quality. It's a frame grab from a 1080p Cycliq video that should look much better than this.

Wow... Your photos take me back almost 30 years to when I was stationed on MCAS El Toro. In those days I was captivated by the new Mountain Bike movement. I bought a Lotus Pegasus, and thought that was the best thing in the World! At least, the price I paid at the time made it seem so. The Saddleback Mountains were my stomping grounds then, but I took a couple of "vacations" at the Marine Corps Special Services facility on Big Bear Mountain. At one point, I attracted some attention, and got invited to Mammoth, where I did one of the first Kamikaze Downhill events. Then it was on to the Rosarito to Ensenada ride, where I learned just exactly how much fun a mass bike ride could be.
Gawd, I miss those days. But the base isn't there any more. (I think it got destroyed by aliens in the "Independence Day" movie.") - But no, that didn't actually happen, did it? No, it got frozen in stasis by the battle between the Orange County developers and the EPA - who are trying to clean-up a contaminated water table.
Oops, sorry... here's a photo from today's ride:
The road is empty as far as we can see... right?
