Throwing Chain
I recently installed a Barfang 500w mid drive motor on a Specialized Rock Hopper frame. I have put 41 miles on the bike. It does fine in the mid shifting gear range. If I attempt to shift into a low gear (bigger rear sprocket.) The 46 tooth drive gear doesn't line up with the rear gear and it drops the chain. Is there any way to fix this or am I limited to the number of gears I can use? The advantage would be less pedal assist going up hills.

there are physical chain retention devices..
Sturmey Archer makes a hybrid 3 internal gears and a cassette so as if you still had a triple crank on it..

Purchase a Lekkie or Luna chainring that moves it closer to the center and has "narrow-wide teeth" that retain the chain much better. Another option that I used for awhile was three cassette gears 11-17-28 spaced 8-speed at the end of the hub. This was adequate gearing because the motor assisted.

The front chainring provided with the Bafang units are known to do that. I had the same problem until I replaced the ring with the Lekkie unit.
Luna Cycles sells a less expensive chain ring for the Bafang units
