90-91 Schwinn High Plains Mt Bike

A barely ridden 23" Schwinn High Plains popped up for sale near me. ChroMo frame & fork. Thoughts on value?

Dunno about the value, but I would snap that one up and build it with dropped bars in a skinny minute.

There’s a nice tig welded one near me that I’ve been considering getting in contact with the owner about. However, I feel at $250 it’s the upper end of what I’d like to be paying.

The first one is a '91, second is a '94 or maybe a '93. Both in the middle of the pecking order, but the '91 has a better frame (TT double-butted) and better components. In these times, it could fetch $200-250. The layer of barn dust (or whatever that is) could be used as a bargaining chip.

'91 specs - Schwinn catalogs, 1991 - 2000 (18 of 577)

Edit - maybe I should eat those words. I think this one's a 1990, based on the location of the lettering. Smaller, as well. 'Course, maybe this one's way underpriced, no "pandemic tax". This price is what I would expect to see for this level of bike, say, a year ago.

Older Schwinn High Plains Mountain bike - $100

Looks like you've had your High Plains set up w/ drop bars for a while. What do you think of the ride quality?

I got my High Plains($75) in 2012 I believe and have always had it in drop bar mode. Mostly when I change it around I am trying a different quill stem but still a drop bar. I’ve said many times the components are meh but the frame is the hidden gem.

The HP has a stable and solid ride feel and I consider it the poor mans Surly long haul trucker. This bike will stay with me till the end!

Thanks for asking.

When you get it replace the price point HS for a Tange Passage. It does well for the feel and look of the frame. That 23” is lugged, good sign! Paint is special and the drizzle is different on every frame.
