But I'm up to 910 km for the year.

Most of my recent walks have been with fitness in mind ... trying to build some strength.

I've also been climbing stairs and I've climbed at least 1470 flights since I started keeping track on Aug 17.
I'm up to 970 km walking ... closing in on 1000 km for the year.

Recent walks have been small errands plus a bit of fitness. To the optometrist to have my glasses adjusted, doing a bit of shopping, and I got off the bus early again today.

Today I rode from my home in the suburbs of Mississauga into downtown Toronto to visit a store and purchase a new roll-top back pack. My old bag is just too worn out after many years of use and I needed a new one. It was a 60km ride and I used my fixed gear bike. A very cool day with frost in the morning, but a beautiful day to be out riding...Toronto is so full of cyclists it's unbelievable, huge big difference from the suburbs...

And most of that has been errand/commute walking.

A couple of days ago, I walked from where I work, across the parking lot, across the street and in front of another store to the Sonic drive-in. There I saw two co-workers who had been talking out front of work when I left for the Sonic.

I joined them, it would have looked snobbish to sit elsewhere. After dinner, we drove back to work.

Driving such a short distance seems silly.

Sunday -- 40.67 km cycling + 2.2 km walking

Today we drove into Hobart and parked the van in a conveniently central location. From there we carried out all our business of the day by bicycle or walking.

First, we did some Christmas shopping, and extended that trip a bit by riding out to the end of the cycleway and back almost to the van, but we took a short detour and did some office shopping for Rowan's job. Then it was back to the van to drop off our stuff.

We were hungry, so we cycled to Fish Frenzy, one of our favourite fish and chips restaurants here in Hobart, and then had some time to kill, so we cycled up the Hobart Rivulet track to check out what might become the start location for an annual cycling event here. And back to the van.

Next up was the walking portion of our trip ... we exchanged the bicycles for folding chairs, gathered up some warm clothing, and walked to St David's Park where we attended the local Carols by Candlelight.

And back to the van.

I'm up to 1072 km now.

I've had a few good weeks of walking lately ...

Week ending Nov 21 - 31.1 km
Week ending Nov 28 - 27.5 km
Week ending Dec 5 - 26.5 km
Week ending Dec 12 - 29.4 km

I've been walking to appointments, walking to do Christmas shopping, walking recreationally and/or for fitness, and walking a bit more as part of my commute.

I'm also busy climbing stairs. Back in October 25 flights of stairs a day 5 days a week was challenging, now that's a rest week. I'm averaging 35 flights of stairs a day 5 days a week now. Plus weightlifting and cycling.

Since being laid off for the winter, I've been able to be vehicle light. I've gone to Service Canada (EI issue, which turned out to be a missing ROE), the downtown branch of the Municipal library (got three books on cycling) and mostly runs to the beer store, today being the first after a snowfall.

Over the weekend ...

Saturday -- High today ... only 25C. Not quite as warm as predicted.

Cycled 41.72 km with 510 metres (1673 feet) of climbing!

Walked 3.8 km to the beach to wade in the water and cool down a bit. And then I picked up a few groceries at the local grocery store at the bottom of the road.

Sunday -- overcast and stormy. So much for the hot and sunny day they predicted.

We got out for a 6 km walk in the drizzle and humidity ... to the next beach over, and then around to that same grocery store as above for a few more groceries.

I took the bus to work the last few days due to a perverse laziness. We had some recent home renovations and the garage is full of leftover construction debris and my two commuter bikes had a flat tire and I couldn't find my floor pump in the garage. It might actually be stolen as I think I had left it out in the yard while the crew was using the garage. So I thought "to Hell with it" and took the bus a few days last week, even though it would only take a few minutes to stop off and buy a pump (the old one is almost worn out and probably due to be replaced) and a few more minutes to do the tires. Instead I wasted a huge amount of time riding the very slow and annoying public transit to my office. As previously mentioned the office is awkwardly located for transit connections to my house. It'll be better in a year or so when they finish a transit tunnel that is disrupting traffic flow on what should be the best route to work.

So anyway, finally today I bought a pump and fixed both bikes, so I hope to ride again a few times before the snow. If I do it is so much better than the transit that I can't believe I was too lazy to fix the tires immediately.

Not been walking near as much as I should be. Had to send my phone off to FL for warranty work (power cycling) and I'm not keen on roaming too far from home without it.

Just hit 1100 km of walking during 2015 today!

I had a really good week last week coming in at 38.2 km of walking! And a lot of that is up and down hills. No wonder I'm kind of feeling it in my calves.

This is in addition to cycling, climbing stairs and weightlifting.

I've been off work since the middle of the day on the 24th, and there has been quite a bit of walking and cycling, including walks to the local grocery store to get supplies for all the baking I've been doing.

Going forward into 2016 ... just in case anyone here is interested, there are Weekend Rides threads each weekend in the Road forum. The Road forum is a friendly, welcoming forum, and of course, you are very welcome to add your rides to the Weekend Rides threads and to comment, in a friendly way, on other people's rides.

wipekitty's airport adventure, Winter edition, complete with super-secret bicycle parking! 6.5 miles in the snow is still faster than local cab service. And free. And way more exciting.

I was at a conference in Washington DC over the weekend, and got quite a bit of walking in, thanks in part to staying at a much cheaper hotel about a mile from the conference hotel. (My employer - The State - funds work-related travel as little as they can.) Then, I got to ride my bike home from the airport - it was dead, cold, quiet, and very relaxing.

There will probably not be much more walking for a while due to ice. I tend to do better on wheels in the winter.

I ended 2015 with 1131.7 km of walking. I had hoped for 1000 km, so I'm quite pleased with that result.

I've continued right along into 2016, and so far, two weeks into the new year, I'm at 35.7 km ... a little bit under the 1000 km pace, but I'll pick it up. Maybe I'll aim for 1200 km this year.

I've been doing shorter walks at lunch ... shopping or browsing. Checking out some of the new year sales and things. But next week, I'd like to start doing some longer walks. On another forum, there's a challenge to walk to a location (street, building, landmark, etc. etc.) starting with the letter A, and moving through the alphabet. So I might walk to Argyle Street ... that's an easy one. And then maybe Bathurst Street ...

Today all my recent browsing culminated in a purchase. A new doona set (duvet set) for the bedroom. A fresh look for summer. We've got a darker set we've been using much of the winter, and a really bright set we use in the darkest days of winter, but I wanted something fresh and light for summer.

Decorating the house without the use of a car.

Today, I walked down to the little local grocery store to get some veggies for the slow cooker meal I prepared. It's nice to have a little grocery store like that so handy ... and they've often got really good prices on produce.
