I passed a guy and his wife, and he was so struggling up a little tiny hill. He didn't know to gear down, and his cadence must have been about 5 turns per minute. Poor guy, and his wife was behind, doing a lot better than he was. He was carrying about 80 pounds of extra weight in his tummy.

Anyway, I said "hi!" as I passed and wished him well.

35 hot miles on the Screamer this morning; a club breakfast ride. 15 miles to a restaurant for breakfast, then 20 miles back. Sweating both ways and while in the restaurant. Another Heat Advisory in the Heartland of America.

Our temps were the same, but we didn't have your arid conditions. Relative humidity started around 95% and got down around 75% by the finish. I'm not sure if it has ever been 30% humidity in Georgia.

42 miles, 69 degrees when i left, sunny and clear. Went to the beach, to warm up i got on the wheel of a 35 year old doing 24 mph, after a bit i took the lead for 4 or 5 minutes, he went out in front for 3 minutes, I took the lead again for 2 minutes and warm up was over so i slowed to 20. I caught him at the beach and we chatted, then we found a club ride of 16 or so riders doing 22 mph, so we joined at the back for about 6 miles, they went north, i went east for my rest stop. All and all a good ride, 37 miles in 2 hours flat, includes all stop signs and red lights. Hit 2000 miles for the year. Ride on.

51 tandem miles on a cool, overcast morning. Ride included about 2000' of climbing, but the three 14 percent pitches were a real workout for us. This is our last long ride before the Marin 100K in two weeks. Next weekend will be shorter, maybe 35 miles; us seniors gotta take it easy.

Some of your rides above are what I hope to get to! Congrats on the 50mi, 35mi,, ect... I need to get up to 40 miles in time for an MS ride in Sept. Back in MO. Two days of 40 mile legs. (Shortest one they offer.)

Thirty-two miles today. I had planned on taking a longer ride, but the weather got to me.

Despite my motto of, "if you can't be on time, be early," I was late leaving the house. At 9:30 it was already about 90 degrees, the humidity was high and the wind was gusting to 33 mph. After riding 16 miles into a quartering headwind, I decided I'd had enough. Unfortunately, not long after I turned around, the wind shifted so it was just a crosswind. It seemed like a long ride home.

I rode 55 miles today, nice weather, sunny and 75 - 80 degrees while I was out.

After the ride I came back to downtown Eugene and stopped at the outdoor market for a snack. There was a Grateful Dead cover band playing, whole lots of people dancing and bouncing to the songs. It was definitely a 50+ crowd, looked like they brought a bus over from the hippie nursing home, not a pretty sight, but funny....kind of.

Oh yes, I will admit to bouncing and dancing when they played Cumberland Blues and Truckin. And the cycling clothes are pretty common in Eugene, so not much notice there.

Rode 22.5 miles today. Didn't get much sleep last night and I think that and the heat took the kick out of me today. Only one power lap instead of the normal 3, so I rode the rest of the ride with my wife, who also did 22.5 miles, at a nice pace of 13-14 mph.

Yesterday--planned to do 100 or so......left around 7 am hoping to beat most of the heat in NC. However after the sun got pretty bright and the asphalt started to take on the heat it was pretty tough. Cut it short to 70 miles. Then put on our 4th TT event of the year that night at Charlotte Motor Speedway so was on my feet for 7 hours on super hot asphalt. Today I'm recovering in the A/C!

46 sweaty miles from our home on the north side of Indy to "downtowns" in Westfield, Lamong, Whitestown and Zionsville, before heading home. Stopped in Zionsville for a very welcome bottomless iced tea and a small cinnamon roll (no pie, sorry). BTW, it was the maiden voyage for the new Cannondale Synapse Alloy 5. Performed admirably, save for a couple of less-than-precise shifts, and my own inexperience at incremental shifting with compact cranks. Very comfy ride.

Commuted my usual twenty mile round trip on Friday. 102 F, 121 heat indes, but didn't feel any different than usual. Did two car trips on Saturday, and the heat caused the batteries in both my car and my wife's car to fail. Conclusion -- this weather is too hot for driving, but fine for cycling.

I hear it's hot over the pond,well it's freezing here in north east Scotland 55 deg F with a 22mph northerly wind,thick cloud ,thats a wee bit colder than normal.I rode 30 miles today with a wooly hat and gloves,only managed 14.5 mph average, the headwind and hill climbs slowed me down from my normal 17 mph.
Now I probably wouldn't cope with your high temps,but it would be nice to feel the warmth of the sun on my back again,oh well maybe we will get a summer next year.

Drumnagorrach - 55 sounds good compared to the 155 we've had here in the midwest. Did 35 sweaty miles today through the Cuyahoga Valley. Best part was that it was with my son who just fixed up an old 80's Giant Cabriolet road bike I had around and likes it better than his new Specialized hybrid. I tried to tell him....

87 miles on a club ride in W. Wisconsin, with 4000 feet of climbing. There were about a dozen on the ride, but as usual we soon clumped into groups with different paces. Five of us did the main 49 mile loop together but only one other was interested in doing the second 30 mile loop. Later, we missed a turn and accidentally added a few miles. I've been doing 70+ mile rides on most Sundays in June and July, and I'm beginning to get the hang of them. Unlike the shorter rides where I'm ok just eating at the rest stops, I need to eat while riding after about mile 50. Otherwise I get depleted and fatigue sets in. And once that fatigue shows up, I need to eat something about every half hour to keep it at bay. It makes sense - once I deplete the stored energy, I need to keep supplying it orally. Man, I hate those GU sugar packs, but they when I'm flagging, they revive me.

BTW, we had the terrible heat last week, but it's just gorgeous in the N. midwest now. I think the high today was maybe 82. Perfect riding weather.

52 miles on a club ride this morning. Largely flat-to-rolling but with enough hills to make it interesting. More corn and soy beans growing in Central Indiana than you shake a grain elevator at.
Did I mention that it was hot?

Club barbeque today with 22 miles beforehand for me. Good size group of 100 or so riders. I'm getting faster and stronger by the week this year but those skinny girls still go flying by. The chicken was so-so but the sweet corn was outstanding. The sweet corn in these parts is the best.

I taught a class at UCSD on Saturday afternoon, right while ComiCon was in town. My "Captain America" red-white-and-blue Schwinn mountain bike got a lot of attention.

Why yes, I had a glorious . . . six mile ride early this morning! I got bit by flies and the smell of the area from the heat was getting to me by 6:30 a.m. I still enjoyed the riding I did, tho.
