Sometimes I just redraw the entire route. Computers are stupid, and that Ride Director was trusting the algorithm to get it right, without testing it. It was several years ago so I don't remember exactly, but am thinking that I did copy it, and it was so corrupted I had to redraw it. Zoomed out it looked OK, but if you zoomed in to certain intersections it made crazy little loops that generated que sheets that were totally worthless.

That happens for a variety of reasons, sometimes from using Cycling instead of Driving or vice versa under Follow Roads or from clicking on an intersection or just to one side of one. An easier fix than redrawing is to select Add/Remove Control, put a control point on either side of the boo-boo, then grab the course and snap it - move it off a bit, move it back, and let go, making sure of course that you have the correct travel mode selected through Follow Roads. Like you say, I never use a provided cue sheet that's a RWGPS printout. And the thing of it is, if the cue sheet is wrong, so is your Garmin course file. As it is said, you can tell who's riding with a Garmin and a bad course because they ride 100' past the intersection, then circle back..
