Tarmac expert 2017 v 2018
Whats the better buy here? They're both 4k.
What makes it difficult is the 17 has dura ace while the 18 has ultegra but an updated frame. Any opinions to offer?
thanks

Honestly the '17 Tarmac is already a world renown road bike...previous years...two riders, Contador and Nabali winning the TdF on it.
So, I would say a jump ball because of DA versus Ultegra...generally always best to get the newer bike...but DA has some cache'.
Best tip? Buy the bike that you like the color the best.
Truthfully, the color likely matters more than any difference between the framesets or the groupsets...especially if the '18 is new Ultegra R8000.

The frame is 200 grams lighter, more aero, and stiffer. Nobody said Ultegra was better than Dura Ace but the gap is much closer now. If you were blindfolded you wouldn't tell the difference in performance between the two. They'll shift and brake the same. Ultegra is a little bit heavier.
So you'll have a Better ride with the better frame.

Further, I will take last year's DA over new R8000 all day long.
OP, be careful what you wish for.

Better?...with one caveat. Stiffer? '17 Tarmac was already in its 5th generation and one of the stiffest most responsive road bikes on the planet targeted for the best elite riders. The '18 now has a proprietary aero seatpost and so you are stuck with Specialized crappy single bolt saddle clamp that comes on that post that you can no longer change unlike every generation of Tarmac that proceeded it.

My advice would be to ride both and come to your own conclusion. Component wise, its probably a toss up from a functionality standpoint but who has any real saddle time with either the new frame and/or the new Ultegra 8000? Chances are the new frame along with the new Ultegra will be quite awesome to ride but the 2017 frame is tried and true with Dura Ace that speaks for itself.

So its looking like slight aero gains with a weight reduction at the risk of heavier groupset and weird seat post. Ugh, when did bikes become so fickle? I'm getting roller skates instead.

2017 would be my vote. Great frame and top notch components. The Spec seat posts are sub par. Mine is constantly slipping.
