What does your commuter bike weigh?

Yesterday, I rode very "spiritedly" through the city and decided to go not quite as fast as I could but pretty fast. None of the roadies could keep up with me on the uphills. As one guy was tailing me, I pondered the fact that his bike probably weighed less than half of mine.

So I got home and weighed my bike. Forty-eight pounds! Holy poop! That's with rack, fenders, lights, dynamo hub, wired computer, bell and eight-pound lock.

I'll shoot a new picture, but this is basically it. It no longer has the basket, and it has "combo" pedals with SPD on one side. Also, it now has a Brooks B17 saddle.

Oddly enough, it doesn't feel heavy to ride, and I think it's because it fits me so well.

23.5 lbs for a 33 mi RT (without backpack). But you could probably best me (maybe if I loose a little more weight )

Weighed at 32.2 lb for mine (hanging scale). Early 80s steel road race bike, about 21 lb naked. The extra 11 lb is PDW Full Metal Fenders, small Carradice bag with Bagman support, U-lock (which is probably 5 lbs by itself) and a few odds and ends in the bag, water bottle, Silca frame pump, Niterider headlight w/ battery, computer, a few blinkies and a bell. I'm surprised it doesn't weigh more; I might re-check that tomorrow.

(Edit: re-weighed and that is correct. Plus the backpack with the stuff I usually carry, and all clothes incl rain gear, helmet, cap, everything but underwear and shoes is another 11.7 lb.)

I can move along pretty well on this bike but the extra weight definitely is a drag. My weekend bike weighs about 18 lb with spare tubular and CO2. It accelerates so much faster and climbs the same hills in a gear two cogs smaller.

Tom, I'm sort of staggered that your bike weighs so much. The base or naked bike must be 25 lbs, and it doesn't look like 23 lb of stuff hanging on it?

How did you guys weigh your bike? The spec says my Trek 7.5 FX should be 10.2 kg (22.5 lbs) as-is, but I've got full fenders, a rear rack and an under-the-saddle bag. I'd like to weigh it to see the number myself.

Mine's around 20 kg - 44 lbs. Sturdy alu frame, Brooks Flyer seat, steel handlebars, fenders, alu rack. When I removed front suspension for some metal forks I also added a heavy chain and lock that are always on the bike. Haven't measured since, but guess it's still around that weight.

I feel it when carrying bike upstairs, but it's no problem - I'm young and strong.

Diehard, I weigh myself on the scale with and without the bike and take the difference.

I have a hanging digital luggage scale, they cost about $10-15 on Amazon.

Good idea! I just tried it. The result is 27.8 lbs. It means the Topeak frame pump, saddle bag filled with tools and a tube, full fenders, serfas USB-chargeable light and Bontrager rear rack - they weigh 5.3 lbs together. Sounds pretty reasonable.

I've not been able to check this. But my foldie, bicycle alone, is 15.8kgs.

Add some weight from a backpack, a 6 litre seatpost bag with aluminium clamp, front and rear lights, a vibration sensitive theft alarm, a cable lock, some tools and an airhorn.

Subtract some weight from upgraded tyres - Kenda Kwest to Kojaks.

I maybe close to the 18kg mark - around 40lbs.

Still, I enjoy riding it around.

I weighed my 80's diamond back mtb about a month ago, I believe it was right around 28lbs completely unloaded with fairly light street tires on it. With rack and trunk installed it would probably be another 3-5lbs, with a typical load we are looking at a total in the ball bark of 50lbs. I wish I could carry less and just use a backpack because the bike has a really fun sporty feel unloaded, but alas the text books, tools, lunch and spare clothes must come with me.

My curb weight is about 27-28 pounds when I include my pack with clothes, tool kit, frame pump and light. Just the bike is about 23 pounds. I'm not very weight-conscious but I try not to make it heavier that it reasonably needs to be.

I've never weighed my road bike on the theory that if the bike is built right, the weight is were it needs to be. I wish I could take the same attitude when it comes to my own weight, . My commuter feels "light" to me and very sturdy (I love the combination of a road frame geometry with 26 by 1.5 tires for commuting) but I hadn't weighed it until today. It weighs 30 lbs on the nose with lights, fenders, a rack, and a pump:

32 lbs. fully dressed. 7005 Columbus aircraft tubing frame, steel drop bars, 26in MTB wheels and street slicks. All the other accessories included. Weight only matters when going up a hill. It is very fast and nimble otherwise.

My other steel road bike that I use in good weather is 29 lbs.

I don't want to know.

Fully-loaded, I'm sure it weighs 40+ pounds.

My "A" commuter currently weighs 19 lbs. I'm going to install race blades this week and that will knock up the weight 0.5 lbs.
My "B" rain bike weighs 20.5 lbs. SKS chromoplastic fenders are pigs (~1.2 lbs).

My commuter is also my tourer it's a Surly LongHaul Trucker and has both front and rear pannier racks with a Topeak rear trunk bag. I've never weighed it but I know it's heavy. It's a sweet riding bike and does everything that I ask of it so weight is of no concern for me.

Good question, I'll see if I can grab the bathroom scale tonight and weigh it. I'm going to guess north of 45 pounds.

I have a Cannondale T700 touring bike. Stripped naked, it's 11.5kg (25 lbs). However, with fenders, water bottles, lights, rack and rack bag (i.e. how the bike is actually ridden on my commutes), it's 17-19kg (37- 42 lbs).

I have a digital hanging scale. BTW, I have a Trek 7.7FX with full fenders and rear rack. Actual bike weight is 12.6kg (27.7 lbs). However, I've made some changes from the stock bike. The Bontrager saddle was replaced with a Brooks B17, the 20/24 spoke wheels didn't last so they were replaced with 36 spoke Mavic A319 wheels with XT hubs. I upgraded the brake levers and brakes, rear derailleur, pedals, and a few other things. When it rolled out of the bike shop, it weighed a hair under 10kg (22lbs) on the bike shop scale.

Sounds like a defect. Bontrager race wheels are decent entry-level hoops.

It may have been. It was actually just the front wheel, the rear is still okay and I keep it as a spare (because a 24 spoke rear paired with a 36 spoke front would just look weird). In this case, the braking surface wore down a lot except at the pin joint. This effectively created a bulge in the rim which made the whole bike shudder when the brake was applied.

Mine is just over 27 pounds as pictured here. With the trunk bag I carry every day and the typical contents it's around 33 pounds. If I've got my laptop with me it gets up to around 38 pounds.

My LBS has a hanging fish scale that you can weigh your bike on. Mine weighed in at a hair over 26 lbs with my Garmin bike computer w/ speed & cadence sensor, fenders, rack, headlight, seat-bag (with spare tube, CO2, tire levers).

You could also use your bathroom scale and weigh yourself with the bike then subtract your weight without the bike. Most bathroom scales are only good to 0.5 lbs, but some are good to 0.1 lbs.

It should be noted though that since I started cycle commuting in early June, I've lost over 30 lbs, so compared to then, my bike is virtually weightless.
