GCN proves 90s Trek bike as fast as $10k aero super bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I get the impression most people don't think about it that much and get the latest just because it's the latest and that's what the guy at the bike shop told them they should get. Same with all kinds of fashion. There's nothing wrong with it. Not everyone wants to spend all their free time analyzing bike parts or ride a bike that looks like an old beater. My neighbor kid races bikes and bought a new Ultegra Disk Emonda last season, and I noticed the other day that he got new tires. I asked him what kind of tires they were. He didn't know. Said the guy at the Trek store told him they were good. I've asked him before what gearing he was running. He didn't know that either, and he's a mechanic at the Trek store. He just wants to ride a cool bike. I've talked to the owner at the local Trek store, and he said he has a few customers who spend $12-15k a year on a new a top-of-the-line bike and wheelset. Every year. These are just normal middle-aged guys from the suburbs who want to ride a cool bike and have plenty of money to get whatever bike they want.

Then there are those of us who actually race, and train with power and know how hard it is to add 5W to our threshold power so giving those up on the bike due to rolling resistance, aero, or weight when the guy you're trying to stay with in the group has considered the same thing. The engine is the most important aspect but you can put yourself at a disadvantage that training can't always overcome. Gotta remember those in your Cat are likely training just as much if not more than you or have the genetic gifts to be able to hang. Its not like when you're out on a group ride with a bunch of randoms of varying fitness

They've lost the weight advantage because of the disc braking systems? That doesn't seem like much of a reason to upgrade.
The Domane isn't a typical carbon disc bike and no, the porkiness isn't primarily due to disc brakes. There's an articulating cradle in the HT that allows the steerer to flex from crown to stem to provide additional compliance. Likewise, there's a bearing/pivot point in the TT/ST junction that allows additional rear compliance, essentially allowing seat post flex below the junction and along most of the seat tube. The 2020 models has clearance for 38mm tires and come standard with 32s. The wheels on the $2500 model are 2kg pigs.

You can buy a Canyon Ultimate CF SL Disc 7.0 for $2400 that is 17.5lbs. Thats right in line with a lot of rim brake bikes

Ya but if you can’t keep a 30mph pace like the pros I still don’t call it racing even if the so called group is racing.

Where do you come up with this stuff??? Not everyone on here is 80 pounds overweight (your words)...do you even own a bike since you sold your Litespeed to buy that Madone that did’t fit you and you had to sell?

I’m actually about 110 pounds overweight smart guy but I don’t see that having anything to do with my statement. Formula 1 race is a real race...that’s like the equivalent to a Tour de France pro race. Guys racing Honda civics on the street is equivalent to the cyclists here that can’t keep a 30mph average. That’s not a real race.

And no replacement bike yet.

Have your gained weight? If I recall, in one of your first posts here, you were 80 pounds overweight, passing 50 year olds like they were standing still?

Physicists keep talking about theoretical objects with negative weight. Maybe an exotic space bike would even things out.

New styles of Sock Puppet are emerging in the 41 to Troll the Pond:

We've had the Athletic-Sock, purporting to be astonishingly fit and oh-so Fast.
The Ankle-Sock, posing as an utter newbie awash with impossibly earnest basic questions and unsure of which end of a bicycle faces forward.
The Tube-Sock, a faux laid back stoner/hipster amalgam spouting Zen-Control and Oneness with their brake-less Fixie.
Now we have the Compression-Sock, posing as a morbidly overweight, bike-less and yet all-knowing expert on all things 41 hoping for a forum violation reference to his/her faux"weight".
Hopefully next is the No-Show-Sock who doesn't Troll BF at all anymore and actually went for a bike ride instead.

This is just poor trolling form. The trick is to make it at least to some degree believable.

According to Bondi, Bonnor, and Forward negative mass is possible. But the gravity effects are surprising. See the attached pic. As I read it the bike part is easy as you can do it with a 'regular mass' bike. You just need to find a negative mass hill to climb.

I dig me some physics and cosmology, but I haven't come across negative mass. Looks bananas.

I guess you have to prioritize then? Good thing you made out like a bandit on that Trek that didn't fit, that's got to help with all these expenses.

I tested a banana, but its gravitational and inertial behavior was consistent with purely positive masses.
