Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Just finished today! It's a Salsa Las Cruces scandium frame with carbon fork. It's now sporting the old drivetrain from my road bike (Ultegra), Avid disc brakes, Ritchey biomax bars, Mavic SpeedCity wheelset, with Thomson stem and seatpost. I only have one very short ride on it thus far, but if it is any indication, I'm gonna like it a lot!

Here's my Seven Ti singlespeed (42x18) 'cross bike. Simply put, I absolutely love this bike!

Since these pics were taken, I've removed the XTR V-brakes and Dia-Compe 287V levers in favor of a set of Campy Record carbon levers and some NOS Shimano XT calipers...wow, what a difference! I've never liked V's (I've been using discs on my MTB for 6-yrs) and could never get these to work properly. I finally gave-up and went with a set of the NOS XTs. These were a little tempermental to set-up, but now that they are, perfect modulation, power and lots of pad clearance...finally, nice brakes!

SS MB-7:

How do you keep the chain tight on your Seven? It seems from the pictures that that bike has vertical dropouts.

Do you race that seven? I'm just wondering how that SS set up works for you. I run a single chain ring 8-speed but I remember losing a race once b/c I did not have a 53 ring in a paved down hill finish

SS MB-7, did you ever consider the carbonfiber Spooky canti's? I have them on my bike and they work absolutely fine.

Yes, the frame has vertical dropouts and an eccentric BB (EBB). Prior to having my SS 'cross built-up at Seven, I had been using an EBB on my Seven disc-only SS MTB for over 2-yrs without a single issue. The EBB is particularly useful when using a rear disc....no fiddling with adapters, having to worry about aligning the rear caliper with the rotor when the wheel is moved fore/aft to achieve chain tension, etc. So, even though I'm not using discs on my SS 'cross, I thought I'd have Seven add an EBB to my cross. It works just as well.

Yes, I've been racing it for the last 2-yrs. Works great! There is seldom the occassion where I'm disadvantaged by running SS. For the most part, if the section is too steep to ride, I dismount and run. These are typically forced barrier dismounts anyway, so no loss there. Also, since 'cross racing conditions are typically crap (mud, snow, ice, etc.), not have a drivetrain to worry about makes things easier...I just keep pedaling while the others are frustrated with miss-shifts, no shifts, etc.

Yes, I have actually

As I mentioned, I'm currently running some NOS XT2 cantis. And, while much better than the XTR V's I was using, I'm still not entirely happy with the XTs. As a result, I've been looking into the Spooky's (aluminum or carbon) or a set of Paul's (NeoRetro up-front and Touring in the back).

With regards to the Spooky's, I've read that some users need to bend either the brake pad post or the actual fork brake bosses to eliminate squealing, vibrations, etc. Bending doesn't sound like a great option. The Paul's, on the other hand, have this adjustability without any bending. Just curious if you encountered this.

No, no such problems at all. I just popped them on, adjusted them in the usual way and they work without any problem.

can you explaine the eccentric BB thing? I did a quick google search and it's late now but basically what it looked like to me is that the whole rear triangle is on a sliding scale bracket type thing attached to the BB. Is that the case? here is the pics I found: https://www.ohler.com/ss/obike/

Sure, here's a pic which should explain everything.

Essentially, a standard BB threads into an expanding wedge. This wedge is allowed to rotate within an oversized BB shell. The standard BB is offset from the center of the eccentric, so when the eccentric is rotated, the BB actually moves fore/aft and up/down in the shell. This allows for chain tensioning at the BB instead of at the rear dropouts.

I simply loosen the EBB with a 4mm allen key and then rotate the unit with a Park spanner until the desired chain tension is achieved. Tighten. That's it. No fiddling with trying to align a rear wheel in horizontal drops, no fidding with a rear brake, etc. Very simple...and, effective. I've been racing on my Seven SS MTB for over 4-yrs and my EBB has never creaked, slipped, etc. That's why I had Seven use it again on my SS 'cross.

There are 3 types of EBBs:
1 - expanding wedge (Bushnell);
2 - pinch bolt; and
3 - set-screw.

Oh, and here's a recent pic of my 'cross bike. I used my 'cross bike as my solo 24 Hr back-up bike. Fortunately, I suffered no mechanicals, etc. on my primary 24 Hr race bike, so I never needed it. But, it was ready-to-go.

yeah... i've been trying to get sponsors for the shop team [we're having an official team this season] and they're really keen until i explain what cyclo-cross is. then they look at me sideways with puzzled expressions.

"it's a demented sport invented by belgians," i say.

that seems to explain it well enough.

i think cyclo-cross is one of those cross-border things between northern france, belgium and the netherlands. the french seem to have invented a kind of running-cycling sport in the 1920s, but it only seems to have become organized in terms we recognize today shortly after the second world war in northern france and belgium.

Velocipedio,
Think you can manage to find a 2nd car as well? It was kinda cramped in the Civic with 4 riders, bikes, & gear. No big deal to me as I am up for it but the guys in the back seat...

SS-MB7,
See ya soon in OBC!

I use a third eye chain watcher, but nothing other than the chain guard. The chain is short, so that keeps some of the tension.
