With the rise of carbon fiber bikes that started from the 90s, me thinks that the next generation of Classic and Vintage riders/collectors will be no more. Why? Because all the carbon fiber bikes would have disintegrated into the dust and there will be very little bikes worth collecting. Sure there's a bunch of custom steel bikes and other production steel bikes out there, but these numbers are nothing compared to what they were back in the day when all the frames were made of steel.

I think Classic & Vintage folks will be stuck ogling bikes from the '50-'00.

It's not like that when carbon fiber bikes are used they wear out like pencil erasers or tires when they get used. Bikes from this era will get collected and considered classic and vintage in time when this generation that is using them now gets older and the technology changes in the future. This newer generation will likely just consider the decent steel mass production bikes that we appreciate as being ancient.

Uh, iab meant from the 1930's to the 2010's. Just the older end of that time line qualifies as antique age.

No one is gonna restore modern cars either. My 95 Accord is 10 times better a car than my '56 Pontiac was but I'd never fix one up.

Personally, it bugs me that bikes from the mid '80s to '00s get discussed at all as "C & V," but that's just me.

Agreed, unless it is a highly desirable model such as a Corvette, Mustang, etc. The same will probably go for the majority of assembly-line-made-in-Taiwan CF frames. They may be good, but will they be collectible? History will decide this.

On an email discussion list that I belong to, the "Classic Era" ended in 1983 for various reasons - the death of Tullio Campagnolo being one. My pre-1983 "Twilight Era" Ciocc San Cristobal just barely gets me into the club.

Vintage rap music is hugely popular... mostly on the internet. Just like C&V bicycles.

There will eventually be a generation of people to whom the 1995 Honda Accord represents "the good old days" before Technology X or Legal Requirement Y "ruined" cars. Hell, I love Hondas from the late 80s because they're dead simple and very reliable cars. If I had the time, money, and skill to restore a car, a Volvo 240 would be on the short list.

Sure, it's hard to imagine people drooling over an antique Cannondale CAAD9, Trek Madone, Specialized Synapse, or what have you, but I bet it'll happen eventually.

Not to mention the import tuner scene. People like to build "period correct" hot rods. The same will hold for these cars as well. I imagine a lot less original restorations because current vintage cars were not made strictly as appliances in the same vein that modern cars are.

The slightly more broad acceptance of what is C&V is part of what makes this forum a great resource - in my opinion. I have absolutely nothing against the above mentioned list (and I do follow it as frequently as I have time to between my duties here and time spent on VeloBase.com). Bicycle tech has made some significant jumps in the last 20 years with the intro of STI and the carbon fiber frame becoming dominate at the top of the racing bike pecking order. Thus, I think if I were to name a point where C&V generally ends for me it would be at the introduction of STI and Ergo shifting.

To the original point - there are plenty of quality aluminum frames out there that will be on the road just as long as most of the steel bikes we know and love here today. Just look at the following that the CAAD frames have even now. And even though around here we are wary of anything with the word 'carbon' in it, I suspect there will be more than a few "classic" carbon frames rolling in 10-20 years.
