Schwinn 1970s "all original" vintage bike.

https://poconos.craigslist.org/bik/3229997123.html

Only 4 miles from my house. I don't think it's worth $100 though -- there's a lot of apparent rust and will need TLC. Can anyone comment on the quality and a more appropriate pricing? I'd have to go for a closer inspection of course.

Thanks!

To me, its all about condition, and in particular, the condition of the frame paint. I would rate what I can see of the frame paint as mediocre. Add rust to the mix, no thanks. Its a Schwinn Collegiate, 40 pounds of two wheel wonder. They typically enjoy a nostalgia premium, but this one is way too high.

Now if it was pristine, beautiful paint, no rust, etc., then price is about right for the Poconos.

This one is a project, with issues. I love projects, but I start with one where the frame paint is very good or better.

+1 I don't see a $100 in value on this bike is in pretty rough condition and as said it is 40lb 5 speed clunker these are only worth about a $100 in good condition. In its current condition this bike just ins't worth what it would cost to fix up restore so for practical purposes it has almost no value.,

$100 would be top dollar for me on this model in EXCELLENT condition. As-is, I wouldn't even touch it for $40.

Thanks guys, I knew it. I'll send a little message to him letting him know that it's hardly worth the price in its current condition.

For a quick litmus test, I like to check out the cranks on older schwinns. If they're 1 piece (american) like the bike linked, I just steer away, but if I were to buy it'd be for much less than $100.

Screenshot for posterity:

The suburbans were a bit more capable. I have one that is redone a couple times and it rides like a caddilac. The worst part about trying to improve it is the crank(almost 7 lbs). The wheels are remarkably light for being freewheel and steel, but they are hollow tubing. Therefore when inspecting one of that era be sure to check for rust through the chrome or dents in the brake face. That said, I agree with the previous replies on value. There are a few at the local shop here in pristine shape listed for $100-120 range.
