Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campagnolo Veloce vs Athena?

10 vs 11spd, Athena has skeleton brakes, Athena RD looks a little different, those are the things I see that are different.

My question is, is there a BIG difference that worth the extra cost?

2014 or soon to be released 2015?
You do know that Veloce is 10s and Athena is 11s. Depends how much it matters that you go to 11 cogs in back.

I'm asking about the 2014 groupset, but 2015 sounds interesting, you got any pictures or info?

I don't really now if the speed difference matters to me. I have two bikes now, one has 7 speed, other has 9, I tried 10 and 11 but i'm really happy with my 7 speed, it's enough for me. So there are no differences other than 10 vs 11s?

So why not stick with your 7spd then... Lots of info here; Campagnolo Official website

Because it's a very old and super cheap Shimano 200GS, I really hate it, it's just crap. Sorry, I meant i'm happy with 7 speed, the gears are enough, but the gruppo I have is really just the worst. I'm building a new bike and I need a gruppo for that.

Maybe i'm doing something wrong but I can't find anything about the 2015 Athena or Veloce groupset on the Campagnolo website.

Okay so new levers and front chainrings.

I also noticed that Athena comes with a different casette that has "Ultra shift teeth design", don't know anything about that. The question is still is it 220 euros better?

If you are coming from 7 speed you will no doubt be happy with Veloce. I have 9 speed Veloce on my back up bike and it is still great. I have Centaur on my main bike, and honestly I just spent the extra dough to have a little extra bling and cause it matched the bike better. All that said, in the immortal words of Nigel Tufnel, Athena still goes up to 11.

Not sure why you skipped Centaur as it is the top 10sp group.

Honestly, if I had been building a steel bike instead of a CF bike I would have gone with the Veloce for the same reason.

In 2005 I originally had my BreakAway spec'ed with a full Chorus drivetrain. It is all plain aluminum. I wasn't aware that there was a change.

So it is still true that Chorus is the cheapest Campy 11 speed cassette? I'm riding 11 speed Record on my Alchemy and so far my 11 speed cassettes are all Chorus.

Athena 11 has two big advantages in my mind: cross compatibility with Shimano and SRAM CASSETTES and wheels, and also the availability of carbon crank and brifters, for those doing modern steel builds rather than retro classics. IMO, silver brakes and derailleurs look great with carbon crank ( on the right bike).

Really? Intriguing. I know Ribble sells complete groups, but I didn't look into it to closely as I was already in a bit of trouble and was determined to bring the project in under budget...

My Athena EPS grouppo came with a Chorus 11 cassette and chain.

Correct, unless it has changed very recently. I think lacking a lower priced 11 speed cassette may hurt them in the long run as Campy users may go increasingly non-campy for wheels and cassettes.

That has been true even in the short term in my case, and there is no performance downside; the Athena works perfectly on Shimano Ultegra cassette, anyway. I switch between Campy and Shimano wheelsets often without needing to make any adjustments at all.
