You’re a madman for trying to fit fenders in there! But it worked and I respect it. My 310 is an amazing ride. Same year. Eventually I might try to throw fenders on with 700c.

'86 54cm 610 ... I think the components are all original except for the Miyata saddle, 6-speed Sunrace freewheel and pedals straps. I really like the ratcheting Shimano shifters. They bring a needed level of refinement to the half-step (plus granny) gearing. Catalog says same weight as the 1000, 26.6 lbs. It also came with Blackburn front pannier racks.

Thats very nice. Great color scheme. I like that they moved the second set of water bottle bosses from the underside of the down tube to the seat tube. It's my size, too! The perfect size.

I bought this Miyata Three Ten in 1984 from Stone's in Alameda, California. It was my only road bike for a lot of years. When I got started in the C&V scene, it already qualified. I had some spare parts and I thought it would be fun to update the bike as I might have in the 80's after the new SIS stuff came out. The only obstacle was the Shimano top mount shifters. But after comparing the two types of mounts, I figured out the main thing keeping the SIS lever from seating on the base was the six little tabs on the inside. I was able to snap them off easily with needle nose pliers. Then I needed some 4.5 mm screws to hold them together. Turns out some Shimano stem shifters have a 4.5 mm hex head bolt with a plastic wings. The plastic wing nut slipped right off. I put a lock washer behind so the bolt head would stick out far enough to grip with a wrench. I also got a pair of seven speed wheels and a Shimano Tri-color crank and derailleurs. Everything works well together. The indexing is crisp and the lighter wheels make the bike more lively. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I just got my first vintage bike and its a 1988 Miyata 615! Came across a 46-inch with a Terry-style small front wheel (can't post a pic b/c I'm new here, but check my profile pic). A lot of the parts seem to be original and I almost feel bad doing some changes to make it suit my skill level, but am really happy to have found a touring bike that fits me. I am still getting used to the feel of it, but taking it for a short test-tour next weekend after a safety check at my LBS. I'm going to go nose around in some other forums soon to learn how to (carefully) clean it up a bit, too.

A little intimidating but also exciting to have such a nice bike to be learning on!

Hi everyone, think I've read the whole thread.

This one is a 1984 110 in Ocean Blue; I already asked as a thread but it sounds like I might find an answer here. Other than paint nicks it's in excellent shape, no bearing pits at all, hardly any rust, and the braking surfaces are barely worn. Still has one Miyata tyre, that's still good, best preserved tanwall I've seen in a long time.

Dupli-Color Bahama Blue metallic is not right, the Miyata colour is paler and seems to have smaller flakes.

Consider me a cult member though I'm ecumenical toward all early to mid-80's Japanese steel. My touring bike is an '82 One Thousand. My partner's all around bike is '86 Ninety (still a solid bike even at the low end). And I just got a sweet deal on an '83 Twelve Hundred that needs a little TLC. God, I love these bikes.

Found something fairly rare the other day. 1986 Pro Miyata. First year of the Splined Triple Butted tubing for Miyata. It is also interesting that only the Pro had the fastback seat stays.

I have a fantastic Professional from 1980 when I joined the cult a few years ago, but that bike broke a spoke the last time I took it out and haven't made the time to repair.

It is rather wild that the top level Team and the 912 at one notch below the Pro both had splined forks and the Pro did not, but only the Pro had the fastback seat stay design. I have always been on the lookout for one of those 912s in my size in that black/pink paint. I think it is a fantastic combo.

Regarding the spline tubing, have any modern manufacturers produced frames using the same splining technique? AFAIK, it only exists on these older Miyatas. Gimmick? Or, perhaps too much money to retool for something like this these days. Patent involvement? Seems to make sense though, kind of like a torsion box or corrugating/ribbing something for additional strength.

There were others and I am not sure who was first. Columbus SLX was splined and Ishiwata had a type as well, but they called it channeled. Below is from the 1988 Fuji catalog. Ishiwata made Fuji tubing to their specs.
