61 yrs old and the direct route is 12 miles rt. Which I do in the winter. In the summer the rt is nothing short of 20.

I have a 12 mile round trip and am 33. My girlfriend will typically do around 18 miles round trip.

I turned 70 a couple weeks ago. My daily commute for the last 18 years includes 7 miles of biking (in two sections) and an hour on the train in between. I ride a folding bike, which is the only way to get a bike on METRA during rush hour. The actual *riding* distance is 95 miles, which I have done a few times just to say I could do it (on the folder!).

Bikes: A few older US made Cannondales, a modern Soma Saga (no longer made, alas!), and one gifted crabon Specialized. Never enough.

56. In less interesting times, 40 miles RT in the cooler months, 23 miles RT in summer months, taking bus home for most of return leg. I don’t handle heat well at all, but enjoy the cold months. Of course, it only gets down to the teens (F) here. COVID has thrown a wrench into the usual works this summer. Not particularly interested in testing out safety of bus (plus the wife told me I would be sleeping in a tent if I set foot on the bus) so this summer I mostly carpool, negating all of the above.

61 next month, 40 mile round trip but sometimes I will take the long way making it 50 or go for the metric century at 62 miles. The most direct route is 25 miles round trip but I only go that way in the winter when I need studded tires and use the ebike. My regular commuter bike is the Velomobile, it’s almost as fast going the longer routes compared to the shorter way but less hills the longer way and I can ride much faster.

Great idea. I am just now plotting out my bike commute, which I hope to begin next week.

The reason age is a good idea is because it sheds light on the typical respondent to the thread.

If I entered the numbers correctly into a spreadsheet for respondents who answered both age and mileage, these numbers are representative:

Mean age -- 55 years old. Half of the respondents are in their 50s. Range of 30-73. Median age = 56.

Mean RT distance = 20 miles, rounded. Range of 5-50. Median RT distance = 18 miles.

48 years old. If I take the direct route to work, less than 1.5 km. If I take the beautiful cool air early morning route, around 10 km.

I wonder about this. Perhaps as we get older, we become more immune to other people's opinions of us. I know that's true for me. After all, some of my co-workers seem to find it amusing, and a little odd, that I ride a bike to work most days, even though I can easily afford a car. And at my age (late 50s) I really don't care anymore what anyone thinks about such things. And I don't care what anyone thinks about my helmet-hair, sweatiness, and rolled-up pants leg.

The old retired guys bike a ton and are fast! I discovered this while commuting and some of those folks are now strava friends. Since 2013, my commute has been about 30 miles per day. One job was 16 miles each way and currently 22 one way and train + 6 on the return. I'm old enough to know better :-) I've been biking in the mornings before plunking down on the couch to work for the day.

Retired now, but at 65 I was still doing 32mi RT (12 in 20 back). But not in the winter, as I rode prairie paths and light gravel most of the way - no safe routes to work on roads.

Pre-pandemic: 17 miles one way / 34 round trip. Back in 2006 by commute was a shade over 1 mile to work and I biked in work clothes. Then I rode a bike to get around campus so that made up for the short commute.

57, 16 mile round trip, two days a week at the moment. Soon I'll either pick up another day or two, or lose my job.

42, 12 mile round trip. Only once or twice a week at the most... (pre-pandemic anyway) it would depend on weather and if I played soccer that day or not, which could have been 3-4 times/week. Now it's mostly work from home..
