Why does a 8s shifter only pull enough length for six cogs?
I have a SRAM 8s grip shifter that appears to be smooth giving me 7 clicks, which is correct for 8s.
The RD is a matching SRAM 9.0 T500-535-4, which is indexed for both 8s and 9s.
However, I'm only able to move in-between a range of six cogs on a 8s cassette. Depending on where I set the cable, I can only make it work these cogs:
H 8-7-6-5-4-3 L
H 7-6-5-4-3-2 L
H 6-5-4-3-2-1 L
I've got both limiter screws removed, so the problem's not there.
The shifter appear to not be "pulling" enough cable length for a correct actuation ratio, which needs to be "more".
Is the shifter incorrect or bad? Do I need to open it up and wrap the cable another way?

Sram also makes shifters that work with Shimano derailleurs, you probably have one. A Sram grip shifter intended to work with a Sram 8/9 speed derailleur will usually have 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 or other similarly formatted number in it's model name. If the description of the part mentions 1:1 Ratio, then it should work fine with your derailleur.

The shifter is a SRAM Attack, has a 2:1 ratio, and is said to be compatible with Shimano RDs.
The SRAM 9.0 T500-535-4 is a RD with a ESP 1:1 actuation design.
Both shifters look old and original. My guess is that the PO smahed the original Shimano RD, and replaced it with an SRAM RD thinking it'd be best to match brands.
