Why do folks use an image host to post pictures?
I just select the "insert image" icon above and download the photo from My Pictures on the PC. I'm very satisfied with this especially since I discovered that double clicking on the downloaded image brings us a menu for sizing and positioning the picture. Why would you use an image host?

have to admit - I've tried to post pictures as you've describe and sometimes it doesn't work. The best I have gotten is a little tiny image. Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated as I'm sure the world would be a better place if only I could share some of the deeply profound images I have collected of my bike by graffiti, the freewheel I couldn't remove, my ice encrusted bottom bracket, etc. (serious about the first part -any additional guidance would be appreciated)

It looks better than some tiny image you need to click on to see, and it works better when viewing the forum on a mobile device.

LET'S ROLL
I sometimes use the same photos for other pages(Facebook, Roadbikereview, etc.)
For me it's easier to upload once and then just link the pic.

Because it looks better and there's no clicking necessary - 'specially with multiple photos, clicking through a "slide show" is amateur hour.

I posted a picture of my bike on BikeForums in the "Post your hybrid" thread of the hybrid section. I also posted that picture on a computer sim racing forum in the off topic section in a thread, "Post your bike". Again, in an off topic section of the RC forum, there is a thread on bicycles and I posted it there. I put it on Facebook. Another forum has an off topic discussion, "What other hobbies to you have" which is typical of just about every forum.
This 1 photo is not the only photo I have. I have thousands of photos. I have used many of those thousands on various forums as outlined above.
Other than the actual posts typed into the threads of various forums, I didn't use any storage space of the individual forums to post that picture. Using a photo host is the best way for the individual forums because storage space to a forum is limited.

It's faster to get images from phone to a hosted site than it is to download to the PC and upload to a forum.
File size limits.
And for some reason, uploading a pic into the forum makes it show as a thumbnail (maybe I've not taken the time to learn to do this correctly).

Also, local upload requires reader to be logged into the forum to see the pic. There are lots of lurkers who don't have an account or haven't logged in. Having been one of those lurkers at some point here and on other sites, I find that really annoying. I see no reason for it, aside from the small risk of bikeforums.net becoming an image host itself. So I use an image host and let everyone enjoy the content.

Also, not every forum enables the direct upload.

Ok, but as I said, I do adjust the image size posting from My Pictures. But glad I asked.

I'm often times posting from different devices - multiple computers, phone, tablet, etc. It's just easier to have the photos in a central location for that. The "cloud" as they say.

All of the aforementioned reasons, plus this one: Control.
Specifically, TOU (Terms of Use) Section 2a, final paragraph: [excerpt] "You automatically grant and assign to us, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant and assign to us, a perpetual, irrevocable, unlimited, fully paid, fully sub-licensable (through multiple tiers), worldwide license to copy, perform, display, distribute, prepare derivative works from (including, without limitation, incorporating into other works) and otherwise use any content that you post."
I'm not complaining, just saying.

I realize that a BF member can delete a thread s/he starts, and one's own posts within someone else's thread, but many other forums do not permit it; as well, deleting threads/posts if one gets "banned" [gasp!].

I take it you mean the linked-to external images within a BF post. I'm assuming it (the TOU excerpt) doesn't, because if the source image at the URL disappears, so does the image in the BF post.

this is what I always get, so I seldom post pictures here because I just don't get why the image is small .... this is a 1.11 meg file, I post it on other forums and it is full size, but here I always get these small images
edit number 2 ... the first time I tried to insert the pic it was a 1x1 inch square and then I found the sizing box, but it was not intuitive, but I get it now......
