From what discipline did you come into triathlon

Just wondering from what activity folks came into triathlon. What discipline were you already doing...and decided to add the other two? Or did you just decide to take up all three at the same time?

I was a track and CC runner in h.s. in the late 70s. Right after h.s. working as a lifeguard I got into swimming a little bit for additional fitness. Then triathlons began popping up here and there and I wanted to give them a try. So, I added the cycling.

I ran a marathon back in April, injured myself shortly after that so I couldn't run, and decided to swim and bike for exercise. When a friend who does tris regularly found out I was swimming and biking, she found a tri, convinced me to sign up, and that pretty much was the start. I'll be doing my second one next week and I have a 70.3 in May.

I was undisciplined.

My interpretation of the question is that it concerns what discipline a person first competed in before competing in their first triathlon, but I never competed as a runner, cyclist, or swimmer before my first triathlon.

I expect I first tried running shortly after I learned to walk. I was in polliwog swim class probably when I was four or five. I got rid of the training wheels on my bike probably when I was six.

I swim laps in the morning before work at my local YMCA. Some of the other morning lap swimmers were doing triathlons and coerced me into trying it.

Even now it is difficult for me to think of my participation in triathlon as being part of a competition. My main focus is to finish and avoid injuring myself.
