Just as with sports teams, nobody cares what school you attended. Nobody cares that your child is an honor roll student. And with absolute certainty, nobody cares what political candidate you're endorsing.

It's tacky and pretentious on motor vehicles and I'm sure it would be the same on a bicycle.

As I recall, the University President (or Dean, or whoever was presiding), decided that a team of competitors from outside the university would be admitted to the event, as a lesson to the favored team who had caused so much trouble from mixing with the townie boys. So, the team was assigned the next poll position based on the 33 existing entrants, 34. Anyway, that's what I remember from the film.

Well that's about half the answer. The actual bike race at Indiana Univ. there in Bloomington is called the "Little 500"...in reference to the Indy 500. But that's all that's in common because the mens race is 50 miles. Women race 25 miles. So, since the Indy 500 has 33 starting position, they have 33 starting positions in the Little 500. Except when, as you point out, on those occassions that there are more than 33 starters, they are assigned starting positions 34, 35, and so on.

Who knows why the Indy 500 has 33 starting positions?

Not that I'm consciously trying to promote the college I attended for my freshman year - but my Fuji still wears the Ohio State bicycle Registration/Parking sticker from the '76-77 school year. The OSU campus police would ticket any non-registered bikes parked in the racks on campus. I never rode my bike to classes but I got the sticker anyway... Oh, and my bike was stored (illegally) under my bed any time I wasn't riding it...

Reminds me how I'd sometimes take my '85 GPz550 into my dorm room at tech school to work on it. Good times, good times.

It’s tacky and pretentious to have a sports team bumper sticker on your car?

If you're an out of towner with an out of town sports team sticker . . . YES.

Because that's been the tradition since 1912?
Since at the blinding and crazy speeds in the 80mph range on that size track they estimated 33 as the max capacity?

There was a rule against it? I wonder why.... Safety, perhaps.

My freshman dorm had a big room in the basement where we could lock bikes up. The next year, I moved to the building across the street and there was nothing at all like that even remotely safe, so I kept storing mine in the basement of the freshman dorm. At some point though I gave up on that because I kept finding stupid petty vandalism, burn marks, etc on it so I started keeping it in my room. My college career lasted just two years, so who knows what ingenious plan I might have come up with after that.

Back in those early days of the 500, AAA was the race's governing body. They determined that...placed at a safe distance apart for the maximum speeds the cars were capable of...they could fit 33 cars evenly spaced around the track. Obviously if they applied that rule with the max speed of cars today there would only be about 10 or 11 cars in the race.

Every college I've ever been to has a student bookstore, and every student bookstore I've ever been to sells stickers and decals.
