Nishiki International 1980

Is this Nishiki International 1980

Just bought this nice bike. All decals gone but nice headbadge. Seller said N-International, but I would like to verify. Looks to be original components, except saddle.
SN: KJ06558 "W"; SP: 26.6 mm All Suntour parts and forged Suntour DOs; Tange stamped on steerer tube;
The reason I questions is that other 1980 N-Inter pics I've seen do not have these features of this bike.
Center pull DC brakes;
2-Top tube side braze-on cable stops;
Rear top bridge on chainstay for brake.

Is this a N-International or another model? Is it Tange Chro-Moly tubing? DB?
Could it be manuf just assembled w/ older tubes?

Nice looking bike. The seat post diameter will reveal a clue about tubing type.

Different year obviously, but my 81 has engraved seat stay caps and does not have the rear arched brake cable stop

I'd be willing to bet the OP's 1980 is an International as specs could vary considerably from one model year to the next. My Kuwahara built '82 International has quite different components and is all original except for tires. That's a "cheesy" seat cover over the near mint Avocet Touring saddle.

Traditionally, Nishiki Semi-Pro / Competition on up were double-butted Ishiwata CrMo, whereas the Kokusai / International was plain gauge CrMo, which is consistent with your seat post diameter.

Components look consistent with the model. Fortunately by 1980 they had abandoned the cheapo Sugino Maxy unit.

The International model seemed to move up-market around this time, even used some fancy welded-and-brazed lugs for a couple of years in the mid-80's.

The wheelbase shortened and the rims narrowed, the bike became more sporty.

Somehow I took a liking to this older one, put a lot of miles on it even as I had quite a few newer and lighter/nicer bikes available and ready for the road.

I would suggest that the bicycle is NOT an International.

Your observations about the frame are correct.

Some of the Olympic 12 models came with the same rear brake cable stops that are on your frame. The Olympic 12 was a Chrome Molybdenum frame.

I agree, I'd lean more toward that being an Olympic.
I bought a new International back in Dec. of 1979, also blue, but the blue was a lighter color.
It also had a forged fork crown, Suntour Cyclone down tube shifters and derailleurs, Araya 27" alloy rims, Dia Compe 500G side pull calipers and levers, Sugino forged cranks and alloy sprockets, and alloy Champion handle bars,
The seat stays were scripted 'Nishiki, and a 'Micro-Adjust' forged seat post and an SR 110mm stem
If I remember right, the color options that year were a medium blue metallic, burgundy/red metallic, and champagne or silver.

I don’t think it’s an 1980 International. Could be an International of an earlier year or a different model. My parents bought me a Nishiki international in 1980, when I was a teenager. It had “Nishiki” stamped on the upper ends of the seat stays Sun Tour frame shifters, Sugino Super Maxy cranks that looked like yours, but the crank arms were stamped “Super Maxy.” Derailleurs front and rear were Sun Tour Cyclone. Rims were Araya 27x1”. SR Laprade fluted alloy seatpost. Dia-Compe 500G sidepulls with a black rubber tipped quick release lever..
