Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel choice help!

I need some advice!

I have a bike that comes with 30mm Giant SLR 1 carbon clinchers ~1450g. I have a set of 46mm Reynolds assault clinchers from my previous bike that had a power tap hub ~1750g.

If it were you, would you stay with then lighter less aero wheels or switch to the slightly heavier, more aero wheels with the power tap and why?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I ride in an area that’s mostly flat with some rolling hills. No mountains.

300 g is a decent weight saving but in a flat area I'd take aero and power meter over weight

Try switching back and forth and see what you think.

Unless you are training according to some plan, I am not sure what the power data would do for you ... but if you find it helpful, there is the answer.

The lighter wheels will help you accelerate, and make you bike feel snappier and more responsive. The heavier, more aero wheels will pay off if you ride regularly over 18 mph or so and more the quicker you ride, assuming you aren't urban commuting and going stoplight to stoplight.

IMO.

Unless and until you put a crank, pedal, or whatever PM on the bike, the PowerTap wheel for sure.

If not, send them to me.

The Assaults look more bling - go with that.

Seriously, though - you're not exactly doing much climbing in Shoreview, so I'd lean towards the Assaults with power unless you think that they feel considerably less snappy and fun than the Giants.

Nice to see someone from the Twin Cities on the forums! It's thawing out pretty good, so I'm hoping to do some riding this week!

It's not too bad - I've gotten in a couple road rides this week. Some ice/puddles in the shade (so mostly a problem when heading east) and some of the roads in my area have gotten pretty beat up over the winter, but better than riding on the trainer or not at all.
