I was on Tunitas Creek Road in Half Moon Bay. Going up the hill but in the forests, I believe it read BIKES NOT ADVISED. I guess the gravel is loose. So I turned around and rode back. But in your case, would you continue on or would you just turn back and be safe?

If I were on Tunitas Creek I'd definitely continue since it's a great road for bicycling as long as you don't mind climbs. Very little traffic and enough scenery changes to keep your mind off the exertion of the climb.

Google maps marks the road as a bicycle friendly road.

Bet some local put up the sign to keep the road to themselves.

When was this? They were resurfacing Tunitas a couple of weeks ago and it was a mess. Should be OK now.

Almost any street I ride on in New Orleans has an implied warning - "Bikes Not Advised". So...given that I am used to it, I would have proceeded to at least find out why. The sign was likely thought up by someone who never rides a bicycle, or because some doofus fell off and filed a lawsuit.

I still ignore signs telling me a road is closed in my car, and drive up just to make sure there is absolutely no way through, so I'd probably just ignore it until I saw a compelling reason to stop.

Is it an official looking sign?

I remember fighting a cop one time over this situation... I was driving to work that very rainy day and the access to our office was blocked off by cones and barriers... with a small opening. My office was well above the flood zone, but Obie had blocked off the road at the intersection, well above the office. No amount of discussion was going to change his mind. He was right and the public was wrong.

So I parked illegally and walked in. After work the officer was gone, and those that had driven in before the barriers, simply pushed the barriers out of the way and drove home... I walked to my car and found it had not been ticketed.

Guy just refused to listen to the obvious... That which we at the office saw every heavy rain... the intersection below the office (from a different direction) floods... the office and all the businesses well above the intersection were perfectly safe... except from overzealous enforcement.

Sometimes you really do have to just go look for yourself.

Especially on a bicycle! Almost always a way through. Once I was touring and got to the Steamboat Trace Rail-Trail in Nebraska (I think) and the trail-head sign stated the trail was closed for construction. It was a Sunday so I figured no one would be actually working, and going a different route sounded unappealing, and I had all the time in the world anyway, so I proceeded. Of course when I got to the construction area there were no workers and a clear way through. I admit I did get a little nervous when my tire tracks and deer tracks were the only signs of life. No 4-wheeler tracks??!! I thought sure I would be blocked.

Another tour I ignored a "Bridge Out" sign. When I finally arrived at the bridge, it was new construction and finished just enough for me to drop my panniers and portage the bike, then go back for the panniers. I had to make three trips over the new bridge framework to collect all my stuff but it saved me a 30 mile detour and was not dangerous in my opinion. Then, of course, the next five miles of roadway was car free and covered with Fall-colored fallen leaves. Really pretty...and noisy.

This may be nothing more than legal boilerplate.

It might be that there have been bicycle crashes, (probably on the descent) in the past, and this is just their way of laying a foundation of "don't say we didn't warn you" as a defense against a potential lawsuit.

Lucky. Back in 2013, while touring from Pittsburgh to Philly, I ignored bridge closed detour signs. When I got to the bridge, construction workers were literally beginning to rip out the last remaining girder. There was no bridge left. To back track would have taken several miles with at least very steep hill. Fortunately, the construction crew was nice enough to let me cross the creek after the girder was moved out of the way. I took off my cycling shoes and tossed them over to the other bank. Wearing my shower flip flops, I carried the bike across the creek through water halfway up to my knees. Everyone was watching me, and I wondered if they were waiting for me to fall or at least drop the bike in the creek.

If it is not advised because of truck/cars and blind corners - I would not go.

We have a section in Camp Pendleton (big Marine base in SoCal) where it says no bikes allowed. Then a bit later it says "End of overhead projectile area".

No bikes allowed areas on Camp Pendleton may be due to the base allowing civilian cyclist through the base who are not allowed to roam the entire base. I have cycled military base roads in overhead projectile areas. Why would they allow POVs in the area but not cyclist other than keeping civilian cyclist out of secure areas?

Was riding in the area today and these signs were still up on Tunitas Creek and Purisima roads due to putting fresh gravel on top of the road surface. But the roads were in good condition and there was very little loose gravel. We took it a little slower on downhill turns but had no issues with the road condition.

Last time I did that was in CA on Hwy 1 / Coast Hwy at night, (Northbound). After driving around the barricades, I reached a point where something looked odd. I pulled over to the left side of the hwy, (ocean side), and pulled out my spotlight, and aimed it along the shoulder of the road. Omigawd!!! The soil was washed out from under the asphalt, which was suspended in mid-air, leaving what looked like a large cave under the road!!

I backed up, turned around and went back the way I came.

I figure if a sign says somethings not advised there just might be a good reason for it.
