Should I upgrade my helmet?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I upgrade my helmet?

I have a 2018 Giro Register MIPS helmet. Inexpensive 280g helmet.
I ride an aero bike about 7 hours a week and wondering if I should upgrade the helmet for weight or aero reason.
Riding frequency is on the rise and will continue to increase.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Is there anything wrong with it? Looks like a pretty decent helmet. 280g isn't particularly heavy.

Well, an aero helmet is the cheapest thing you can do to go faster, equipment-wise. If that's of interest. Downside of an aero road helmet is decreased ventilation when climbing. Wouldn't hurt to have 2 helmets if it would suit your riding.

I also think it's a good idea to have a 2d helmet just so you can let one dry out if you ride every day and you have a sweaty head.

If you have money to burn, go ahead.

If not, I don’t see much value in a new helmet.

In terms of weight, the lowest you'll likely find for a MIPS helmet is 200 grams. So you can cut your weight by no more than 80 grams, about the weight of 2 1/2 ounces of water. Keep in mind, though, that many aero helmets actually weigh more than yours.

That Giro shape, vents and weight are pretty comparable to my everyday helmet, a Bell Formula MIPS (minus any visor). Good all around helmet.

I have two other helmets that offer distinct differences and advantages:
  • A POC Omne Air Spin, more of a commuter helmet, but so well ventilated I wear it often in hot weather on my road bike. Much cooler air flow than the Bell. But the POC feels like there's more wind resistance, and over the past year my times are usually just a little slower when I wear that helmet on my usual 20-50 mile rides. I might try a POC Octal or Ventral this year. Most folks I know who wear 'em like 'em.
  • A cheap "Base Camp" aero helmet with tinted visor. It's definitely more aero and shows consistently in faster times. But it's poorly ventilated with the thin plastic vent cap snapped in, and I need to wear a bandanna to reduce sweat spattering the visor. Works well enough I might buy a better quality aero helmet, although I might use it only a few times a year to chase PRs (realistically, any KOM worth pursuing in my area is way out of my league).

But the Bell Formula MIPS is just fine overall. If I'm recalling correctly I considered the Giro Register a couple of years ago when I was helmet shopping at REI. The comparably priced Bell and Giro helmets fit very similarly and seemed equally well made at any price point. A different vented road helmet probably wouldn't offer much.

This ^^. I have a 100$ Bell Formula that works great. I don't even feel it on my head. The only reason I would change it would be for a helmet that looks better on me. Mine is wide and I sometimes feel like I look like a mushroom, but I think my head is the problem, not the helmet.

I have a Kask Utopia. It vents pretty well.

The Giro Vanquish is supposed to vent well, but I've heard mixed things on the actual aero benefits.

There are a lot of aero helmets with on Ebay for low money. I'm guessing the Base Camp model that canklecat referred to is what my wife is using. It is sold under several different names and is pretty nice. Hers looks like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Night-Cycli...lxsBY7zeEXCuww
