Possibly. Not in this case. No one else considered how the ride (which ends somewhere else) got posted.
One reason not to speed is to be able to respond to issues outside of your control better.
If it's a known place for illegal u-turns that are dangerous to cyclists, does it make much sense to speed there?
The cyclist can't keep people from u-turning.

No, but unless we know he was speeding at the time, that’s irrelevant. Can you show that he was? No. Stop assuming facts not in evidence.

Given that we KNOW that the driver made an illegal U-turn, and and we KNOW they did it without ensuring it was safe to do so, and given that the cyclist was NOT certain to have been speeding, I'm happy to stick with my initial judgement that it's the driver's fault. He made an illegal U-turn, without ensuring it was safe to do so. Sounds like negligent homicide to me, but I confess I'm a Biologist, not a lawyer.

Compared to just about anywhere I've ridden in the US, it's far, far friendlier and safer.
This happened last week in Miami where I grew up, the road the accident happened on is one I'd ridden hundreds of times and is supposed to be "safer" as it's off the beaten path. Police officer basically just turned into 2 riders without having right of way and killed one of them.

It was Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick.
Seriously, these "baby NTSB" threads are the worst parlor game ever.

I quite riding motorcycles for this reason, and don't ride bikes in streets (trails only), it became an exercise in paranoia to survive, similar to combat situations. Safety is important, but when a pastime or hobby becomes so dangerous it takes most of the fun out of it, you're just trying to survive from point A to B. I hit the trail very early in the AM, less people and other bikers to collide with.

That's not what I was talking about. I hate these threads where people try to judge the actions of a dead cyclist. I think it's a pretty disgusting exercise where self-appointed "experts" blow gas over a corpse based on sketchy news accounts.

If another vehicle hit the u-turning vehicle it is the fault of the driver turning the U. There is no way to determine the speed of the cyclist. It is the responsibility of the driver U-turning to make sure it is clear and safe to do so. Can't recall where I'd read this, but basically if you are u-turning or reversing and you cause a collision it is presumed to be your fault. Vehicles going straight usually have right of way.
