Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday -- busy day with a Wordpress meeting in the morning. Windy and rainy as it has been most of this spring.

So we walked and I ran 2 km and I rowed 2.5 km.

46 solo miles, WINDYYYYYY!!! At one time pushing hard I was holding 11.5 MPH into the wind. Later managed to bring it up to 16.9 hoping for a 17.0 average. But the freaking winds kicked up and destroyed my average down to a 16.6 MPH!

Felt kinda puny with this persistent respiratory thing after my ride-my-age metric century Tuesday, so I took a few days off other than an easy spin session on the trainer and a couple of walks.

Tried an easy 23 miles Saturday to check the legs and lungs. Felt pretty good.

Sunday, rode my fastest 40 solo miles on a familiar roller coaster route and snagged a few new PRs along the way. Surprised me because I felt sluggish. I took my bike computers off the bikes a few months ago and just ride by feel, so I had no idea my average speed was faster than usual. Normally I can get an idea of my average speed just by my cadence and gearing on a particular familiar segment. But this time I was wrong.

Usually I need to draft faster riders to get that kind of speed. Might be some improvements in my conditioning, but my legs felt kinda mushy Sunday. So I'm gonna give some credit to new kit. I usually wear kinda baggy cold weather kit, preferring comfort over aerodynamics. But a week ago I splurged on some snug fitting cool weather jerseys -- not quite skin suits but more aero than my usual winter kit. Seems to help.

Group ride- nice weather, medium pace, a few folks that you don't want to follow too tightly.

Chocolate croissant at the bakery stop. Continuing the climb out of a fitness slump.

47 miles, 4k' climbing.

Yes KraneXL summer starts in a week but days don't get better than Sunday just gone for cycling. Ideal warm weather the slightest breeze, so perfect. Was keen to ride the old Ricardo again, just fitted a 13-28 freewheel to replace a 12-25 both sunrace 7s and hanger extender. Didn't do any adjustments just fitted 2 parts and it worked amazing. The bikes a far better climber but wish a 39t would fit the front. The derailleur swings a little more forward but that may have played a part in not needing to lengthen the chain, any who it work perfect. Great days ride on a typical hills route.

Saturday had to work. Blah. Sunday it rained overnight and the roads were still damp in the morning. Also a bit humid. On the good side sunny and cooler, but windy. Did a 42 mile ride out to Philippe Park and back home via the Courtney Campbell Trail.

Did a 62 mile RT down to Pinnacles, which is a nice scenic ride although usually involves a pretty good headwind coming back. Surpassed my total miles from last year so pretty happy about that.

Did my first indoor ride on Zwift. Wasn't much of a ride, more of a configuration test. Was actually really weird, but I'll get used to it. Holy crap though, people aren't kidding about sweating. It's a whole new world and I'll need about 10 towels going forward. Even with the A/C and a nice big fan, I was still pouring.

I rode the Raleigh Competition GS into Ventura and swapped bikes at my shop . I then rode the ItalVega home with a 10-15 mph head wind. That was a long 15 miles and lots of water. Our “Santa Ana” winds are very dry but usually warm. Joe. joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress
