TdMIL 2019

Not with MIL, escape from.

This is becoming an annual tradition for me. Get up early on Boxing Day and fly down to my old stomping grounds in NorCal where my zero bike is stored. My Tall Friend Andy keeps it for me at his abode in the People's Republic of Berkeley. Flying from PDX to Oakland is cheap and easy during the dead week after Christmas, and all I need to to bring is a handlebar and saddle bag packed and ready to go for a credit card tour.

So this year's tour route is penciled in. December 26th will be a plane travel day. I'll use the rest of the day to fit up a new front rack and possibly fenders if there's a chance of rain in the forecast.

I'm informed that the Richmond-San Rafael bridge recently and finally was fitted with a bike lane. 27th will be Berkeley to Tomales, where we'll stay at the Continental Hotel. There are several ways to get there, easiest is out Sir Francis Drake, but Fairfax Bolinas is more interesting, and the last time I rode down Bolinas Ridge was a few decades ago, so maybe that's in play. That'll probably be a game time decision. 28th will be Tomales to Andy's cousin in Healdsburg. Luckily the recent fires down there are well past us, and it'll be raining all or most of the next week. I'm hoping the rain is done before this tour! The 29th will be Healdsburg to Napa, 30th will be a short ride across the Carquinez Bridge back to Berkeley, a quick shower, and straight to the airport for a 6pm flight back to Portland.

I'm hoping for weather like this. @nlerner won't be on this trip*, so we'll probably get rained on.

2014 TdMIL

Here's a rough strawman route. Ridewithgps didn't allow me to route over the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, originally the plan was to take BART across the bay and start from SF.

Pointing this out early enough here at Bike Forum in case anyone along the route wants to meet up and ride with us along the route.

*I've credit card toured with him in the dead of winter in Oregon, it was sunny every day.

Don't know how I missed this thread previously. There's a strong likelihood that I'll ride along on the first day, though I'll probably be peeling off to head home before Tomales.

Some great riding in Sonoma county. I grew up in Sebastopol, and whenever I visit my parents I try to make it to the co-op in Santa Rosa. Usually some cool bikes. Highway 1 is dicey around Bodega Bay though.

I'm hoping to get up to SF for like one day around this time, which unfortunately isn't enough time. Sounds like a fun ride! I expect pictures.

Good call to stay over in Tomales. As mentioned, hwy 1 gets a little dicey just north of there where it joins the Petaluma to Bodega bay traffic. If you get started it early morning from Tomales, you should be OK. Bring those flashers - I know they aren't cool. Before that, coming up from the south through Pt Reyes Station and along the Tomales bay is fine. One of my favorite rides actually.

Did they ever reopen the Muir beach to Stinson beach section of Hwy 1, or do you still have to climb over Mt. Tamalpais to get there?

I'm figuring the morning of December 27th won't have much traffic. I'm afraid it'll be too cold to flash, but my bike has a hub generator, head and tail lights.

No idea if Muir Beach to Stinson is open or closed right now, and although the route to Hwy 1 is a game time decision, we'll probably go the easy way and take Sir Francis Drake to Olema. We will ride over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, which opened to bicycles just last month.

That would be great - we're leaving from my buddy's house in Berkeley. He's on Bateman, down near Alta Bates.

Har har har.

If you're riding over the Richmond -San Rafael bridge, taking Sir Francis Drake makes more sense. It will be epic enough, without a giant unnecessary detour and climb in the middle. Should be a lot less traffic, and generally more relaxing. Good shoulders too

We'll need a report on how the new bridge crossing goes. I never imagined there would ever be a bike lane over that bridge.

I’d like to join your ride for part of the first leg, turning back with Dave before Tamales, if that’s OK. I haven’t ridden the R-SR Bridge yet so that would be a treat. I need to put some miles on the Stella before Eroica hits before I know it. Keep me posted on plans, thanks, Alex.

I did a very similar tour when I lived in Berkeley, somewhere around 1992.

The weather could be a bit of a challenge.

Sounds great! Although I know the roads fairly well, and my buddy Andy is a local, it's always good to have a couple of harbor pilots to keep spirit up.

@davester, take note

This will be my 3rd TdMIL. For some reason getting on a plane early on Boxing Day for a short credit card tour to round out the year is very appealing to me.

2013 Ascent of Mt. Diablo

2014 TdMIL (Marin-Napa-Sonoma)

2016 Big Island climb

2018 TdMIL (Bay Area)

What's the "MIL" portion of the ride title stand for? I've looked in this and the other threads and I don't see the acronym spelled out for us slow people

Muir Beach to Stinson has been open for some time now. However, that's a long hilly detour; I suggest paralleling Sir Francis Drake (not riding on it except for the short stretch near Larkspur Ferry Terminal. There's a bike path that goes all the way from Larkspur Landing to Ross, and then we can take low traffic streets all the way from there to Fairfax and then take SFD over White Hill to Woodacre. From there we have several choices of route to Point Reyes Station: 1) (my preference) Head north to Nicasio and then turn left on the Petaluma Road; 2) Jump on the Cross Marin Trail (old railbed trail parallel to SFD) then Platform Bridge Road and Petaluma Road; 3) Cross Marin Trail then SFD to Olema then Hwy 1 north.

Saturday 28th I am pretty sure I can meet you guys somewhere between Tomales and Jenner and then join you to Healdsburg before I loop back. When you figure estimated times and any stops around Jenner or Duncans Mill give me a PM. I am in Monte Rio.

Thanks Gugie.

Ah, I thought that was a myth. I was married, for just 4 years - and I only ever saw my MIL once, at the wedding. I guess that was a good thing

PM sent.

I realized we were headed through your neck of the woods, glad you pinged! I'm not sure if we'll head up the coast to Jenner or go inland through Occidental. I guess it depends on how much we want to stop at Cafe Aquatica - possibly the greatest coffee place in the world.

So the route has been more or less set, a variation from the original.

Harbor pilots have been recruited. davester , gaucho777 and 73StellaSX76 will meet up with my tall friend Andy to head out over the newly bike-lane christened Richmond-San Rafael bridge. The three rabbits will draft us to somewhere down Sir Francis Drake before they peel off, like booster rockets on the space shuttle. Day two we'll hook up with djkashuba around Monte Rio for an escorted ride through the Russian River.

It's going to be fun.

Since riding along the freeway and through downtown San Rafael kind of sucks, I'd suggest a slight variant of the map route and instead cut through Greenbrae and Ross on the bike routes paralleling Sir Francis Drake until San Anselmo. If you guys are good with that I'm happy to lead that section.
