Welp, I am officially a flake. I unquit with coach today.
Last weekend, I rode with a friend who wondered if I might want to make a stab at the State TTT Championship this year.
Yeah, kinda. Not entirely. Who knows if it will happen. There’s no info about it on the SCNCA website. Supposedly a new venue. Where? Who knows. Does my LA respond to inquiries? Nope.
But thought keeping that door open was worth unquitting for the immediate time being.

So the high school next door is now closed. Apparently a pediatric cardiologist at U Penn traveled abroad, saw 13 patients yesterday, and then was diagnosed with the Coronavirus. One of the 13 patients he saw goes to the HS next door. Closing the school for this reason seems ridiculous to me. The student who had contact with the sick person should stay home for 14 days, but closing the school to disinfect is stupid because even if the kid DID catch the virus (which is possible, for sure), he/she is unlikely to be spreading the virus at such an early stage.
Sigh. It's going to be a sucky March.

But better to overreact than to stick your head in the sand.
Apparently Singapore reacted early with social distancing, Italy did not. Of course there may well be other reasons they’ve had a different experience thus far with covid. Maybe Italy’s pop is older, or there’s a more virulent strain of virus there, or Italy was exposed to a bigger “dose” of infected people.
Im not arguing against rational procedures for social distancing but I would support anyone who tries and gets it wrong over folks who downplay the risk and consider the concern to be “hype”.

I used to see a guy at CHOP. In fact, my first cath was at the original location on Catherine or Christian around 16th. Second was at the new facility.
Two years during college I was got paid to be a demonstration subject for echo machines. I was prized because of my VSD and AI. IIRC, I got $25/hr. Like winning the lottery when you are a poor college student. One year the trade show or whatever it was was held at Bally's in Atlantic City. Got my bus fare covered. After the regular hours I did a private session for HP up in a two room hotel suite for people who couldn't make it during the day. Got extra money for that. I remember them plying me with beer and food in one room. Then someone would call the room and say they were coming and I had to go into the demonstration room and get on the table.
When it was all over I decided to take some of my money and try my luck at Blackjack. First time I had ever played a table game. Started with $25. At one point I was up to $80. Next thing you know, I was down to my last $5 chip. Finally got back to $30 ahead and decided to call it quits. Felt like 10 min. had gone by, but it had been close to 1 hr. Very stressful. Have never played a table game since.

I’ll defer to all medical experts but did I hear right on the news today that the U.S has had over 20,000 common flu related deaths this winter and the number of corona virus deaths worldwide is 4,000?
Am I missing something here or am I confused?
I’m not being flippant, just trying to understand the mass reactions and toilet paper buying.

This Coronavirus just arrived, is a novel disease to which our population has no natural resistance, and it’s exponentially more likely to be fatal when compared to flu.
Both are highly contagious and can be transmitted by individuals who don’t appear sick.
Its true that for any given individual, the risk of dying from Coronavirus is low. But a Coronavirus epidemic has the potential to very quickly overwhelm our medical system. It’s not something to be in a panic about personally but it is a legit very serious thing.
