A Trek 850 in 830 clothing?

I bought a grey spray covered Trek for cheap with some nice XCE components and one 26" wheel and one 700 wheel. I thought it might be a hybrid. Well after the gray came off I discovered a 850 Antelope from 1990. I found the catalog and identified the bike right down to a tee. Someone swapped the crank I think but the frame (Tang) and components, color et all are Trek 850. Why does the decal say 830?? The decals look original to me but they had different tubing, different components different colors. I don't really care but was just curious if the resident gurus out there knew. It needs a new BB and tires so it's not complete but it's the first quality vintage mt. bike that fits me so I may keep it.

Maybe it’s a 1989 830. The vintage Trek website says they came in “intense blue with white decals”.

I would think (but I am not sure) the difference between an 830 and 850 of that vintage would just be a few of the components.

Same frame?

Same geometry, different tubing. The 850 would be either Reynolds 531 "All Terrain" or Tange Prestige, depending on when it was built. The 830 would be Reynolds 501 "All Terrain" or (IIRC) Tange Champion off-road tubing.
