They're out of my price range. And I'm pretty sure I could get more gains by just training more/better. But a 3% performance gain with no additional effort sounds pretty nice.

Anyone have any anecdotal evidence?

I thought it was better for you to train at altitude and sleep at sea level.

According to the promotional literature for these devices, they go up to 12k feet. So you could sleep at 12k and train at sea level. Which isn't really practical in Colorado.

Not that the tent makes it practical... but still, I have an idle curiosity.

Yeah but how do you explain it to your girlfriend?

My girlfriend solved that problem by evacuating from the recursive zone. Now I'm single. Except for my cat. But she'd understand.

if your cat sleeps with you in the tent...

can it jump higher? run faster? catch birds and mice it'd otherwise miss?

Not wanting to end up having to sleep in my own bed but still wanting to do just about anything to get better at cycling, I tried to test the waters for a tent like this by asking my wife something like "so I've heard that having sex at high altitude leads to stronger orgasms. Wanna try it?"

don't you need a chimp named bubbles to justify this type of "training"

Edit: For me, 3% is easily obtainable in fitness, diet, weight so I'd only look into this if I was at my absolute limit.

I believe Zabriskie has one but uses it to read/hang-out not sleep because his wife tried it and hated it - couldn't breath/sleep all night. Leipheimer also has one and uses it (his wife used to be a cyclist). On the other hand, I don't think Lance has/had one and he beat them both handily, so you never know.

That piece of gear would exceed even my own preposterous OCP standards.

But Dr. W. is lurking.

Depends on which study you read. The Japanese have had adaptive success with the sleep low, train high.

There's pros and cons to either approach.

Do you really need a Tent, if you don't have to explain your hematacrit levels?

True.

You also have the marathoners in Kenya who live and train high during their "formative years", come to sea level for high intensity training for a few months, race wherever there is money, then return to living and training high until the next season.

Sounds like me, except for the money part.

Apparently there are some hypoxia "exercises" you can do that also have positive metabolic and erythropoietin effects.

Hmm, I go to school in Colorado, but spend my summers in California. Sounds like a good plan.

I was in an altitude chamber at Andrews AFB as part of my Operational Medicine course in med school. I can tell you that a sudden change from 6,000 ft to 30,000 ft made me unable to write my own name. I didn't pass out, but I was in quite a daze. Fun stuff.

I've used hypoxia branded training devices before...it's kinda weird. It's probably helpful, but expensive - and bottom line - I'd rather ride hard outside than get a head rush and spin on a trainer.

I've heard similar sorts of things from people who have done high altitude climbing. For example, at 15,000 they say you start talking to the mountain and at 18,000 it answers back.
