Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coyotes, dogs and cute fuzzy little bunnies. I got paced by a coyote the other day for about 25 feet up a hill (it was dark out). He was on the canyon side of the guardrail. Got bored and returned to the canyon. Dogs... need to be leashed. Cute fuzzy little bunnies, while riding on a local TT course for speed training there is this one area around a corner on a slight decline where these stupid bunnies always hang out on the road. Left or right, left or right, you can hear this in their pointy eared heads...

I've seen heaps of bears and coyotes in Canada, but they don't worry me. Elk can be a bit of an issue sometimes ... it can be a bit unnerving riding through a herd.
That is why we are shipping all our cougars to Australia.

Skunks.

While riding the Prairie Path there have been two times that I was less than 10 feet from a skunk. There have also been more than a few times that I was seriously tired and breathing heavily and rode through a cloud of spray.

Giraffes. Almost got clotheslined by the neck when one was reaching over the road eating some leaves.

Bears. Saw many of them in the hills above Goldbar, WA. The only thing to do is drop the bike and hide in the bushes. Mamas can be very aggressive when they are with cub.

What animal do you see when riding that you'd just as soon not encounter?
So true about squirrels! Couple of weeks ago I was go downhill at around 42mph and making a slight turn. Had sort of a tunnel vision at that speed and noticed a small debris on the road and made a plan to go around it. Just as I was almost six feet away, I realized the damn thing was a squirrel and it decided to just stay there until the last second to bolt off to the side (I didn't know which)! Scared the **** out of me. A larger animal could be scarier, but at least a bear or coyote is smart enough to stay away from a fast moving object. A mountain lion attacking a rider is different story.

How about ... keep riding and get out of their territory???

I was cycling on the Icefield Parkway one day and saw a bear. I stopped and took a couple quick pictures from well on the other side of the road, and then kept going. I felt relatively safe because of the bus load of tourists wandering up and down in between me and the bear.

The hilarious thing was when the bus load of tourist pulled into the service station where I was getting something to eat, and I overheard one of them comment that it must be so dangerous to cycle in that area because of the bears. Yeah ... and it's perfectly safe to stop the tourist bus, get out, and try to get as close to the bear as possible.

I'll bet that squirrel guts get slippery on an asphalt road.

Last yr I got chased by a rabid coyote. I was out on an isolated country road and he was just standing by the side of the road looking dazed and confused. As soon as I passed by he began the chase which lasted for at least a half mile. Scared the crap out of me.

Last weekend I was having problems with chipmunks and one squirrel with a sense of humor. Had several chipmunks run onto the road and freeze just close enough to the line I wanted to take to make me nervous. Then they'd dart in some random direction. But the squirrel, little bastard was laying the road about 10 yards behind a chipmunk. The chipmunk darted and I assumed the squirrel was dead. Until I got to where the chipmunk was then the roadkill squirrel jumped up and ran infront of my tire. I laughed a little when my heart started beating again.

unless it was a really early or really late ride you won't see healthy coyotes on your ride. They will avoid contact with humans unless there's several of them but then you're about to become a meal. If it was after about 7am, chances are that coyote wasn't healthy. The fact that he then gave chase is a damn good sign it was sick.

We almost got plowed by a run away horse in our group ride this morning that came out of the trees and an open gate. He got spooked by the long group of riders and hung a quick left. About 10 feet more and would have been ugly.

Rabbits and squirrels are the only animals that I see run in front of me around here. I see the occasional alligator, but they are off the road usually.

I was riding a state designated trail and bikes are allowed. The trail eventually splits to MUP to the left and ped only to the right. The "Woody State Park Trail." https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/wallace-falls

Advice is offered to dismount immediately upon sight and to prepare to run.

Thanks for the advice.

Elephants - usually 2 of them, in single file. They dont move over and on our narrow island roads, you get to pass them about an arm's length away while they watch you with their beady eyes.

Rabbits scare the crap out of me. They stand completely still in the middle of the road and then dart out at random when you get about a foot away. And they're EVERYWHERE

Seemed at the time this was the most descriptive term to use. No, I did not stop and have a blood test done. Mid afternoon, dazed and confused, Not foaming at the mouth. But I'm sure you knew all this before you posted such a stupid question.

I heard of cougars attacking moving MTBers in BC thinking they are prey. Yikes.

The animal that scares me is the one I encounter frequently and can easily kill me for reason at all - rabid jackwagon cagers.
