600/Ultegra shifter/derailer compatibility question.

Cheers,

I have a new back wheel CXP33 laced to an Ultegra hub with a 8 speed cassette. (FB-6500), I use Shimano 600 RD-6208 derailer for shifting the cogs, and in friction mode, it all works perfectly with my downtube shifter (Shimano 600 again).

Is it possible to use a STI shifter with this particular model of derailer? Is old 8 speed STI Ultegra the only option or there is some other alternative? 105? Dura Ace? Something else?

Thanks!

Yes, RD-6208 should say "SIS" right on the outer cage. It is index compatible with any (excepting DA 6-8s) Shimano shifter 6 speed and up.

Ex-Pres is correct. However, Dura Ace 8 speed doesn't use proprietary shifters, correct? That's just 6 and 7 speed Dura Ace, I think.

You can pretty much use any derailleur as long as it has enough travel to cover the number of cogs.

The shifters control how much the derailleur moves with each shift.

8 speed DA takes a DA 7400 series RD, or alternative cable routing. (I've never tried the alternate cable routing myself, as 7400 DA RDs are out there, often at a reasonable price).

I'm partial to the 8 speed 600 and DA groups, my bikes with STI either have that drivetrain right now, or are migrating that way.

In your case, there were several other 8 speed STIs that will work: 105, RSX (some are 7), RX100 (some are 7), Sora, etc. I just like the aesthetics of the 600 and DA shifters.

No, the shifter is not the only determining factor. The plate design of the derailleur is the other piece. You might get any number of combinations to work, but as Ex Pres said, any SIS compatible RD will work with indexing shifters from 6-10 speeds.

^ DA 8-speed is also excluded. Part of the 740x shift ratio.

OP>> Besides older 8 speed STI brifters, Shimano still offers new 8 speed brifters for sale. They don't have a name designation like 105 or Ultegra, but they are similar to Sora class brifters. I think you can also use Campy shifters which correspond to Shimano 8 speed cassette spacing.
