25.8 miles on a MUP - lots of people in the first mile but after that it was pretty much perfect for biking!

It’s a Saturday so time for another longish bike ride. Solo today for 103 miles with 4500’ of climbing from the house to the in-laws

The wet spring weather has the crops flourishing

Nice barn!

Lunch and first stop at 62 miles. Foot long special all for $5!

Everything I’ve had here is good, especially the BBQ.

It’s great to spot one of these! Harder to find less traveled roads these days.

Near Boone’s Cave and the Yadkin River.

Crossing Swearing Creek on High Rock Lake. Water is muddy from the huge rains this week,

Only 3 miles to go and it’s warming up!
house on High Rock Lake. I explored the area around Churchland, Boone’s Cave and Tyro. It’s a very nice area to ride. I’m surprised that as much as I’ve ridden up that way I’ve never thought to check it out before. Good paved roads, lots of rollers and not much traffic. There were two roads where water had completely covered the roads a day or two ago from all the rain, but fortunately had receded enough to where I could cross.

Today I rode from Concord to Cleveland, Coolleemee, Spencer, Horseshoe Neck, Tryo and then down to Southmont. Stameys BBQ in Tyro smelled really good so that will be a good future destination for sure.

Beautiful day

80 degrees, sunny, 6 miles or so with my boys and wife on gravel and asphalt - smell of jasmine everywhere and a stop at the creek but had to hurry up because the boys were ahead of me. (Not usually the case at all!)
Wish I had some photos, and wish we had done 40+ miles, but it was a great day to be out.

recap -- On segment 1 of typical Midnight Madness 2 segment 100 miler. It's 1:25AM into wind I'm on aerobars riding 20.1mph @ mile 33 and wild pig appears, hits my right side, I go off paved path, front tire digs in, plants me hard left side with bike flipping 180° in direction. Got up, breathe rate like Hummingbird wing flap, felt possible shock approaching due to discomfort that even 9 years earlier almost to the day didn't experience when I had a bike crash with minor broken neck, clavicle and major nerve damage. Waited for buddy to return from turn-around point, ask him to pick-up bike and hold as I straddle. Mount then ride 4+ miles home, tell wife, shower, climb into bed and almost passed out due to fire pain I had not yet experienced even when cycling home or in shower. Trip to ER, Xrays + scans + 8mg Morphine + chest drain for punctured lung + ambulance trip to Trauma Center.

4 weeks since crash in a little less than 10 hours so might go out tonight to pass the spot as a Celebration To Still Be Alive Ride.

10.6 miles outside today. first ride in months due to a saddle sore/cyst. felt good. Heart rate a little higher than I like, and the air was super dry, but all in all a good ride.

This is in the NE Oregon desert...

Friday I rode with my son, my daughter and son-in-law, we only had time for 11 miles before it started getting dark. On Saturday I got to ride 20 miles with my wife, my daughter and son-in-law. It was so good to ride with my family. Both days were great weather apart from the winds on Saturday.
I met a man at church a couple of months ago that likes to ride. And he got a group of 4 guys (all 55+) together and we did 25 miles early yesterday morning. The route was mostly flat. But there were 3 overpasses on this ride that were good to make me get out of the saddle and push myself to work harder.
During the week most of my rides are solo. There is something to be said about the social aspect of cycling in groups.
I will try to take some pictures next time I ride.

I rode 25 miles today, the wind was kicking my butt. I have 133 miles total for the past 6 days, I took a rest day yesterday. I hope to do my first century by August. My wife thinks I am crazy but supports my obsession since it makes me a happier person! I should take some pictures but once I get into a rhythm I don't want to stop!

1:25AM this morning marked 4 weeks ago that MAMA pig hit me at mile 33 resulting in my crash. Got out at 9:25 AM on my 40lb - 2002 - $100.00 - 7spd - grocery grabber Magna with front basket and Rode the Ride in Reverse making it to the turnaround point that I never reached. Winds were very unfavorable but at least the lightning and rain held off until done. Totaled out with 41 super tiring miles.

My first real ride since mid-March. I'm not a road rider (MUPs for me) but after almost 3 months on a trainer in the garage, I had to go out. Hit the roads and hills of our city. Picked a good time: holiday, 7:30 am and before the heat came. It felt GREAT to be in the saddle again and I missed this thing!

Where in Ohio?- I am in south-west Ohio. Maybe it was closed down (crowds and all they have closed ours down before). You may want to hit the MUPs at night. Did a 2 hour night ride the other day on the MUP. We have hundreds of miles of interconnected bike paths here. Kind iof creepy alone at night.

60 miles north of Columbus. It was just a mom & pop shop that has been open but apparently took the Holiday off. I could almost taste that ice cream! MUP is about 30 miles from my house - no night rides for me.

20 miles Saturday, felt great throughout the ride, the best ride of 2020 so far. 18 miles yesterday when my goal was 25 - those were the most difficult miles this year. I thought I could ride all 3 days this weekend, but I just didn't have it in me.

I thought the same thing that I would get 3 days of riding but I am also doing radiation and Sunday was a day to stay close to the house. Got 26 on Saturday and 24 today - I can live with that!

I only had the mental strength to ride 11 miles this morning. The wind was not nice to me.
This is the only picture I stopped to take on a peaceful scenic road.

27.6 miles this morning. Rode to and over my big "summer hill" and while I can't claim progress I'm still going after it. It's an hour down to it which is a nice fast ride cutting through neighborhoods but after riding the hill which wrings me out and brings my digestion to a complete halt (all blood to legs), the return ride SUCKS. 430am departure so starting dark and getting nice sunrise views.

The view from the top. That's Wernher's Big Rocket (Replica) in the distance.

I had to read up on Wernher. I thought you mind find this interesting!

"On May 2, Wernher’s youngest brother, Magnus von Braun, rode his bicycle with a white handkerchief down the hill to look for the Americans; upon finding them, he told them that the German rocket scientists were waiting to surrender."

Looks like a beautiful area for riding.

It was a beautiful evening for a ride. I only had time for 16 miles. I took a ride around Cedar Lake. It was so good to get out and enjoy the fresh air.
