CHI: Messenger question
Thinking of riding my bike for money. Any advice on messenger companies? Good, bad ones to avoid?

okay maybe it's because i've had a long day with relatively little sleep over the past week ... but ... this has been covered and covered over and over and over again.
search the forums. it's up on the top. it's your friend.

ok, so I didn't search the forum but now that I have I would ask that people only respond with valid information and not with posts that begin with "I saw a messenger..." or "I once knew a messenger..." If you work in Chicago or have worked in Chicago and you would recomend a specific company or have info on specific company rates that would be useful.

LIGHTEN UP, VAL. It's just the Internets.
I kid.
(....dude? Seriously. Use the search function, if only to avoid getting SNAPPED by overworked med students. Also: this has been covered a billion times.)

Guys, seriously. I have tried searching this a number of times with various combinations of the words messenger, courier, and chicago, with no decent results. I know I have seen it talked about a number of times... but sometimes search is not as straight forward as it seems.

Farret, check out this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-167426
The word, as I recall it, is that Chicago Messenger Service will hire people without a lot of experience. Expect a hard time getting routes in the beginning, low pay, all the usual caveats. But, you do get to ride your bike, so there ya go.

Thanks chicagoamdream that's exactly what I was looking for (company names and people's names to get in contact with) Now everyone can go back to the brake/no brake thread.

Ok, so here's the deal, more or less. You're best bet is to start off at a bad company, like CMS, while you learn the city. After about a month or so, when you've learned the streets, messenger centers, etc. you should start trying to get in at some other companies. Other than CMS, I might try Apex for starting out. They hire rookies, and it pays hourly ($8 an hour to start). I'm not sure if they're hiring now, but it's worth a shot. You might want to try chatting with some messengers, too, to find out what companies are a-ok. Try the Thompson center (100W Randolph) during the day, and Cal's (Wells and Van Buren) in the evening.

kickstands are useful. they keep your bike from falling over.
search tip: try searching "messenger" and clicking "titles only"
