Yes, I'm sorry, the Canadian health care system is perfect, everybody gets care within a week of needing it and we down south have it all screwed up. I don't really have health insurance at all! I was shocked to learn that after reading this thread. I injured my foot 5 years ago, got an MRI later that week, had surgery the following Friday and paid my deductible. I didn't realize how messed up that was.

I'm sure they're addressing wait times in ERs because it's so short.
We have our own ER problems of course.

Tip for when you do need to go to an ER (not by ambulance) - complain of chest pain, you'll be taken straight back.

No, I think the problem in this thread is that people never had Canadian-style health insurance making judgments based on Fox News-like sources.
No, the OP was talking about using employer-provided supplemental health benefit to cover a bike fitting. These supplemental health benefit in Canada is not paid for by taxpayers, and the employers typically purchased it through life insurance companies. Their main use is for the services for the health of their employees and covers things that's normally outside of medical care. And a bike fitting may be a fine justifications because it may help the cyclist avoiding injuries. The key here is that a doctor has to prescribe this service.

From post #7: "Quite often health insurance will cover you to get a bike but not to get the fit."
Dude is from Ontario, and I don't think he means California.

The general idea of a health insurance company paying for a fitting is actually not that much of a stretch -- if you stop and think about it. I can see a progressive insurance company paying up to a certain amount per year for fitness/health maintenance related expenses. For instance, health club fees and other types of fitness related equipment -- bicycles, etc. More insurance companies are learning that preventing health problems is cheaper than treating them. In the same way that most dental insurance pays 100% for preventative services -- checkups and cleaning.

All I know is any health system, public or private, that pays for things like people to get a bike fit for free is going to have difficulty staying solvent.

What would happen is that the insurance will only cover a certain set amount. In the military we have Tricare, and for my family to be able to use it they have to use a doctor that accepts Tricare. Many doctors don't accept Tricare because it dooesn't pay out top dollar. I don't just get to pick any doctor to see my family. So, for the bike fitting, the insurance might pay up to say...$40. The rest is on you or you have to find a fitter willing to do it for $40. I seriously doubt that any insurance is going to cover something as unnecessary and frivolent as a professional bicycle fitting.

Death panels, anyone?
So many non-Canadians, whose primary news source is FOX, tend to have very scewed impressions of what goes on in Canada related to health care (and several other topics but lets stay focused for the moment).
That was my point and, I believe, the point of the other poster, as well.

Any way to get this covered through insurance or health benefits? Primarily speaking within Canada, but may be a good opportunity for discussion in general.
Edit: When I say insurance / benefits, I am referring to extended medical benefits often provided by employers in Canada...e.g., through Manulife, Sun Life. I am NOT referring to using the Canadian Health System to fund this.

I recently went through rehab for knee tendonitis at a local sports medicine clinic. They suggested I have a bike fitting done, and actually prescribed the procedure, in which case it would be done by a physical therapist. Even then, it wasn't clear if insurance would cover the cost.

well find a p.t. that is also a bike fitter. or a sports therapy office that specialized in cycling. then it could be legit.

Definitely sounds like a girl that has suffered the ill-fate of the Canadian Socialist Medical System...not only did her surgery / treatment not cost her a penny (perhaps she has to pay a bit for her anti-rejection meds, and perhaps she has to pay a bit for a private hospital room (luxury essentially)), but she is now world famous....

My mom had a minor stroke just over a year ago that left her pretty weakened (actually it exacerbated a long standing condition that weakened her in she's in her early 80's...) and so she had to spend 4 months in the hospital.
Total cost $0.00.
Nada.
We didn't sell the house, the car or any of our children.
Now she's back home tearing it up in the kitchen.
Sounds like a terrible system to me.
