Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin bought Firstbeat

I'm not sure to what degree this affects bike products, maybe more HR based features in newer Edge units, and that it should make Garmin more profitable generally.

Seems more interesting from the business perspective of how long Garmin will keep licensing products to competitors, and if those licenses will be competitive in cost. Now if only they would invest a bit in not screwing up Edge and Connect updates...

I'm sure Garmin will continue to issue new licenses and of course inherits existing deals and agreements. Not doing so will only create a rush to fill the void and soon any advantage will be gone. Better to be the dominant supplier and make money with no real competition, while getting an inside track for your own products.

I am sure they will continue to profit from 3rd party licensing but maybe add some to that pricing structure of course. Then again, maybe they believe their name alone holds a market share of the world and there is nothing to lose nor gain in the end.

I am not a business tycoon but if they kept it solely and out priced it to even the competition, eventually another player gets involved and perfects it as well then Garmin is seen as the villain. I suspect they know this and will remain status quo for the foreseeable future.
