Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports -- June 29/30

Last weekend of June. 1/3 of the way through winter ... or summer is getting going. But most importantly, tell us about your cycling in whatever conditions you've got!

The bunch I ride with usually do a 40-50 mile B19 ride on a Saturday morning. A couple of guys wanted to offer an alternative, so they came up with a B20, with limited group size, with the intention of holding a single rotating pace line. On it's first outing, 11 of us did a straight 29 miles out, a short break to replenish liquids, and back in on the same route. We almost cracked 20 mph average on rolling terrain, but maintaining the discipline of the rotating pace line was almost the hardest part - a tough ride but quite rewarding. The goal was communication among the group, and most people received some level of low-key schooling about technique and pace line etiquette. A break from the B19 routine, a physical challenge and an education - all good and worth repeating.

Club ride today. 112k. Was good to ride in a pack and get some drafting going. Although the pack did break up and at one point there was only eight of us. Still, great weather and great day to be out.

Yes the first days of summer are here and it jumped up to the 90s. Finally succeed in getting on the bike at 3am Sunday, my earliest start ever. An incredible two hour ride in the quiet country, pitch dark. My town completely asleep and still! An unbelievable 80°f and 86% humidity, my absolute favorite riding conditions. 58 miles at 16 miles an hour, with a donut stop halfway, four hours total trip. Half road half rail trail, the picture is the same shot an hour apart.

Sunday - Had a great little ride on the Y-Foil today. Cool morning with pretty much no wind until some mild headwinds the final few miles. 25 miles at an avg pace of 20.3 mph. Just missed my PR on the route by 10 seconds. Sorta glad cause I love being able to say that the old early 90's Greg Lemond Maillot Jaune with Campy 8 speed to include DT shifters is my fastest bike on my 25 mile route. This was a huge jump in pace for me though this year as the previous best on the route this year was a full mph slower. The Y-Foil just might be as fast as it's supposed to be.

A pic of the blue rocket after the ride.

If you count Friday in with the weekend, I did 50 miles, longest ride of the year so far. 3+ hours. Stopped at Ed Rudolf Velodrome, Northbrook, IL and did a few laps.

30 miles this morning. Trying to balance out my high right hip. When I get my hips square I really enjoy riding.

I rode locally here in south-coastal Delaware. 3 different routes in 3 days. Friday-26 miles, Saturday-32 miles and Sunday 24 miles. I really planned on riding more miles but Fri and Sat were HOT! Thermometer at home read between 96 F and 100F between 1 pm and 5 pm. Not as bad today but I had an HOA meeting to attend early afternoon. Tomorrow the forecast is for a low of 65 at 5 am and afternoon high of 84 with a mild breeze off the ocean from the NE.

Got 26.9 miles on Saturday and a PR (tied for 4th overall) on a short Strava segment that's 0.588 miles with a 2.45% average grade (max of 4.22%). Did that in 1:43 (20.55 mph) with only a 7 mph tailwind, much less than the real cheater's tailwinds I usually use for straight shot segments! Only recorded 5.13 miles for Strava. I'm one of those guys who uses Strava almost exclusively for segments or strong tempo portions of rides, so I practically never record anything that averages slower than 20 mph. I do tons and tons of slow noodling, too, and some unrecorded openers if I'm going to go hard on something, so I end up recording less than one fifth of the weekly distance that I actually ride.

Sunday was 52.6 miles total with that same m.o. - only recorded two "rides" of 6.47 miles and 5.12 miles. Missed a PR on a 3.43-mile segment in the first recorded bit and thought GPS had gypped me since I actually did get a PR by one second from the intersection just before the start of the segment to the intersection at the end, but enlarging the satellite view of where the segment starts and finishes and looking closely at the landmarks, I could see that I actually did somehow miss the PR by 2 seconds. I just sucked on the last half mile of it. Anyway, I went back out later for the express purpose of PRing a somewhat longer segment on the same road and nailed it. Ended up 2nd overall and barely squeaked it under my "everything going right" goal of 12 minutes - a PR by 29 seconds:

www.strava.com/activities/2493962571#62771937983

Yes, I had a 10 mph wind from about 30 degrees West of North, and it's a N-S segment. But that felt good. Really good. The kind of strong feeling that makes it fun and satisfying to ride a bike.

Another not-so-great weekend for riding in western Wisconsin; kind of steamy on Saturday, some storms blew through on Sunday, and the gnats have been out of control.

Just a couple of quick out-and-back rides on Friday and Saturday to avoid the gnats and start getting acclimated; 29.3 miles, 1,532' on Friday, and 20.7 miles, 850' on Saturday. Regardless of what happens here, I've got to start getting ready for the heat...moving to North Carolina in a little over a month

No cycling this weekend. The weather wasn't brilliant.

But we bought stuff to help put together our home gym. Specifically, a Zwift setup.

I went out for my 26 mile evening Davis Is. ride on Tuesday. Damn hot, but did okay. Saturday I was out of town in the Ocala Nat Forest. I got to ride on some proper hills. If I wasn't going down I was going up. I was worried I'd have some problems, but I did pretty good. This on top of the fact that there was only one stop light on the entire ride. Not my usual routine considering I live in a flat city. 45 miles total. Sunday I went to a cool spring instead of riding.

Forgot to include picture at turn around point at a "biker" bar.

I had a great riding weekend. The weather was beautiful and warm and the mountains beckoned. Wallsburg valley was filled with the smell of fresh cut hay. It was sublime!

Hottest day of the year in CT, but did 34 miles on Sat., ending at a Beer Fest for charity. Luckily, they had free water, too!

OMG I hadn't had too much trouble till my Sunday ride, right at sunrise they appeared!! After ten miles all of my front was covered with gnats. So gross, have not experienced that before. Got off at the trail head and showered myself down abit before riding back on the road. Absolutely covered, was a huge mental chore!

They're usually pretty bad in evenings around here, especially by the rivers, but this year has been out of control - it's apparently beginning to impact livestock. There's a very nice path along the Mississippi River, and I'll no longer go down there without something covering my face.

Sorta busy weekend, at least for cycling:
Friday: 35 miles, including casual group ride.
Saturday: Napped, tuckered out.
Sunday: 55 miles (hard pace for me); nap; another 35 mile casual group ride.
Monday: Napped. Really tuckered out.

152k to celebrate Canada's 152nd birthday! Great day, great weather, and a nice route. A bit of mixture of hills and flats. Worst part of the ride was the wind. From the 70k to about the 120k mark it was nothing but wind.

The beer and nachos after though were perfect!
