How to delete a thread that I started

Is it possible to delete a thread that I started, perhaps by simply deleting the first post? If so, please help me figure out how to do so; when I go to edit my thread, I do not find an option to delete my post, as I normally would.

I was under the impression that it was possible to delete one's own thread - and indeed, recall a heated discussion a couple of years ago after some posters were unhappy that the OP deleted the entire thread. With that, I started a 'dummy' thread to learn how to post a poll.

This is the thread I would like to delete: https://www.bikeforums.net/living-ca...7403-test.html

It is my understanding and experience that you, as OP can delete the first post in your thread and it will automatically delete the entire thread. I've done it many times. It might be broken though. Hope this helps.

Still cannot find the delete option. Here is what I'm seeing (there is nothing helpful when I go to the advanced option):

The contrast case is this, where there is clearly a delete option:

This was my understanding as well (and I would not have done a dumb test thread had I believed otherwise). Hopefully some mods/admin folk will be able to explain if something has changed.

I just deleted an old thread I started a while back using that "delete" button that you have circled in red in your post 5.

It's weird that the 'delete' button is not appearing for the thread I started (as in post #4 .) I tried opening the forum in both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (as well as the usual Firefox), and still no love.

Click the Edit button.
Click Delete.

This message will come up in a grey area underneath the message:

To delete this message, check the appropriate option below and then click the 'Delete this Message' button.
Note: deleting this message will result in the deletion of the entire thread because this is the first post in the thread.

Underneath that area Delete Options.

Select Delete Message.

In the bottom right corner of the grey area is a button that says, Delete This Message. Click that and it's gone.

I just created and deleted two threads following these steps.

This is what I've got. (I also noticed that you were able to create and delete a thread in LCF just a moment ago!) I strongly suspect that there is some setting on my UI that is acting up.

I'll give you the standard IT answer then ... have you deleted your cookies, history, etc. recently? If not it might be time to do that, and then reboot.

I knew that was coming! I cleared cookies/history/temp files and rebooted, and the result was the same. I also tried using the desktop site on my mobile device. Now this is bothering me because I generally get on well with computers and software.

This is correct. Only Titanium users can delete their own threads.

Only Mods should be able to delete threads.

Why allow for the possibility of other people's sometimes valuable info, to be wiped out of existence for God knows what reason(s).

An OP editing his OP post to a "." should be enough.

Just yesterday, I posted to @wipekitty's preliminary thread to this one, on the Living Car Free Forum:

To be honest I'm not all that comfortable with the thought that a thread starter can just delete someone's contribution at will…

That is precisely the 'heated discussion' to which I was referring.

I honestly have no strong opinions on whether OPs should be allowed to delete their threads. I lean toward yes; but my general attitude is that if I start a thread, I have some kind of obligation to check in on it and keep it on track. Others might think that is a job solely for the mods.

Frankly, I don’t see the reason to be so proprietary about a thread, once it is submitted and opened to a large widely varied audience. If it gets too far off-topic, I have seen other subscribers object, and if the OP is interesting enough, likely a subsequent subscriber we will send it back on track. And maybe the deviation is more interesting than the OP

I think the Moderators provide a generally recognized sensibility beyond an OP’s personal standards.

Besides, any and all posts keep a thread alive (except those that cause it to be closed):
