That’s funny, I was just thinking we had a kid and dad like that in my troop too. David and his son my fellow sclubby kid Matt. They played hard-ass but none of us would have predicted what they did later:

This thread brings back memories. Back in the olden days of 1981, when dinosaurs roamed the earth 
and the California Conservation Corps was at the height of its popularity, my crew was cutting fire line waaay at the top of a very steep hill when dinner was called. No one wanted to hike all the way down then all the way back up, so we ate MREs left over from the Korean War; at least, that's where we all agreed they must've come from. It was our first experience with such things, and they didn't go over very well. Several corpies played frisbee with the crackers, and there was much trading back and forth. At the first taste of my baked beans I nearly threw up, but managed to choke it down, because when you're 18 your stomach is in charge, no matter how hot and tired you are. I think that's when I picked up my first (of many) case of poison oak. Ah the good old days.

I didn't mind MREs, for the most part they were decent enough. Meatballs in BBQ Sauce was my all time favorite.

Eveyone had their favorites, I liked the fudge bar a lot and would trade for it , during the gulf war I remember scrounging for those Hershey desert bars

'81? I didn't know they were making them then. When I was in boot camp in '81 we still had the good C-Rations. My first MRE experience was when I was stationed in Massachusetts and someone decided, around '89 or 90, us aircraft maintainers needed more field training and PT, you know Marine stuff. We spent the day hiking in a state park and got MREs for lunch.

As a kid my dad who was a smokejumper would occasionally bring home C-Rations after having been on a fire. Us kids always snagged them for some reason I doubt they were as tasty as I remember.

MRE's mean hurricane land fall around here, man I detest those things now. Too many goofball folks claimed numerous boxes when they were handed out here following Ivan, Dennis and Katrina (2004 and 2005) and they can be found stuffed into the dark recesses of garages. Concentrated sodium and calories made for on the run, high stress, high energy use times.
Fortunately, my USMC service predated them, C-rats were the main course, and desserts as well.

I've seen those a couple times, and was fascinated with them. Never did acquire one, lol. 🙄 Next best thing, but way heavier, is my trusty Swing-A-Way can opener. It just always works right, the first time. The made in the U. S. A. ones, of course. 😉

These are "almost" pretty good and seem to last as long as some MRE's and do not need a P-51 or 38 to open...Yummy (almost)!

Thats kinda the point actually.. It is keep you alive and operational food for a short time period, not fine dining ala Tavern on the Green or even lower tier food like Denny's . Having said that I never starved eating them either.
Constipated if you consume enough maybe , but not starved.
